Fabulous for a birthday party

I’m hosting my 60th birthday party at home in a couple of months and I’d like to look fab! I’m 5’6”, size 12/14, mid dark hair and fairly pale. Big boobs and a lot of loose skin. I like to look a bit edgy for a special occasion (I wore a jumpsuit for my wedding), but more in cut and style than colour and bling. My best colours are quite muted - navy, beige, cream etc. Budget is up to £200, or more for something I could use again.

Would love some ideas and pointers from you knowledgeable people!

Surely not those wintery dresses - in June?

I always think

Alemais

is perfect ‘entertaining at home’ wear. The dresses are above your budget but if you look out for sales on their own site and all their UK stockists you may well be lucky. Try here, too:

But I do love this one on the main Alemais site, sadly beyond my budget these days, being freelance ... Still, it gives me pleasure to look!

Am I the only one who feels there should be a discernible distinction between the sort of clothes you go ‘out’ in, and the sort of clothes you wear when you’re hosting a party in your own home? For the latter I’d want something that’s both glamorous and relaxed. Not a day dress, but not a formal evening dress either. Nor a cocktail dress. It’s hard to describe but I know a hostess frock when I see it.

Oh, how I love the term "hostess frock"! Which of course makes me think of the fabulous Penelope Keith as Margo in The Good Life ...

My aunt used to wear similar dresses in the 70s. She drank French & Spanish wine & cooked (what seemed to me as a child) wildly exotic fare like omelette aux fines herbes & poule au pot ...

I have several dresses that I think could be categorised as hostess frocks. Mostly vintage. But modern versions do exist. Not sure I will suggest any here though, as I've just been laughed at on another thread for posting links to kaftans ...!!!

You said beige or cream - this is ivory, so perhaps too pale? But it's quite a striking cut. You would certainly stand out in it, especially with the right jewellery.

I bought this recently. It's very light cotton so suitable for summer.

I like that! Love the colour.

That last one is giving “marquee” though…
