Cashmere sweaters - so many questions!

I have just bought a new cashmere jumper, and I'm determined to take better care of this one.

How many times do you wear cashmere before washing it? If it's slim-fitting, do you wear anything under it? How do you wash it? I wash them in the machine on a wool cycle, inside out in a mesh laundry bag - is that right? Do you hang them back in the wardrobe between wears? Do you need to do anything to deter moths?
Is there anything else I should consider?

Mine just get munched by moths. I’m not buying any more.

Good advice about wearing a layer underneath. Also, if your item is crew or polo neck, put a scarf or paper tissue around the top when putting it on or taking it off to avoid getting make-up on it and needing to wash it more frequently.

No panic here, @RockaLock - and no difference in approach between different types of knitwear. It’s just that when I spend money on a thing I factor in years, or decades, of quiet, contemplative care for it - and I rather enjoy hand washing!

I machine wash on wool cycle (but set the temperature to cold). Hand stretch/reshape when wet and then hang or lay flat to dry. Especially I try to stretch out the arms width ways as I find this is where they get tight first. I haven’t found mine to stretch when drying if hung up, if anything the main risk is of shrinkage rather than stretching. But I do tend to buy quite dense cashmere, I guess those gauzy knits would stretch more.

I always have a T shirt underneath and wash if they smell or I’ve spilled something that won’t sponge off. I wear an apron for cooking.

Mainly, though, I try not to spend too much on my cashmere jumpers because I live in them from Oct to March and they have a hard life! I look out for cashmere on sale, in outlet stores online (eg BrandAlley), charity shops (but beware of moth), even children’s section occasionally (eg Zara does the occasional child’s cashmere jumper) as I am small.

Reminds me of the beautiful cashmere scarf I had that MIL (who has been asked not to touch my washing) not only washed it, she then tumble dried it.

I cried. She tried to replace it but I can’t find one that was as big or the same shade of cream.

A pp advise was so right, never leave them in a washing basket.
