Is this dress suitable for a graduation?

I bought this dress, intending to wear it to my son’s graduation in August.
I really like it and it does suit me, but I can’t help feeling that it’s not quite right for a graduation.
I’d love to know what people think, especially those who have attended a graduation more recently than I have (the only graduation I’ve attended was my own, 30 years ago!)
If this is totally unsuitable, does anyone have any suggestions ? I’m tall (5’11”) and size 12.
Thank you

Dress looks great to me, especially as you're tall.

I wouldn't wear it with the fascinator!

I would wear comfy footwear with it - shoes or sandals. There is a lot of standing around, queuing. All day depending on timings.

I don’t think it’s ’getting OTT’, rather heading in the opposite direction.

My grandfather bought the first and only suit of his life for my dad’s graduation in the 70s.

Then my grandmothers wore hats to mine. Don’t think my mother did, but certainly she was in a wedding-level smart dress for both my undergraduate and PhD. As indeed was I for hers.

I have found the dressing up very very different at the four different universities I've been to my children's graduations! For each one I wore a Boden type dress as I wanted to look smart but not OTT. It gets very hot in many of the venues. I did end up in Converse for the last one as it was unexpectedly absolutely chucking down that morning and my sandals wouldn't have worked - they were the only other shoes I took with me for the weekend. At least I was comfortable!

King's London (PG ceremony) had many parents of international students in fabulous international dress, Bristol (a few years ago now) was quite traditional as in a nice dress, most men in suits or jackets/chinos, Liverpool last year was far more dressed up and colourful and Newcastle pre Covid had everything from jeans, the odd Abba revival style outfit, regular smart dresses to fancy frocks. Everyone was there to celebrate their children and all of the events have been lovely. I'm old enough to just "do me" in what I wear, with an obvious nod to the type of event.

That dress is lovely, obviously minus a fascinator. You'll have a lovely day!
