Hello everyone

I am looking for suggestions for a dress for my nearly 13yo DD to wear to my sisters wedding in a few weeks. I have looked at all the usual suspects (asos/UO/Next) but can't see anything that might suit her.

DD is about 5'3", and is a 32F bra, size 10-12. Not normally a dress wearer, but recently she chose a milkmaid/skater type dress from Primark, however this is not really suitable for the wedding as it's not a great fit. She will usually only wear joggers or similar. She is autistic so is picky about what fabrics/colours etc.

Requirements:

  • Soft fabric
  • Not pink/flowery
  • Not too short or low cut
  • Sleeves
  • £50 maximum

Thank you for any suggestions!

Try apricot for milkmaid style dresses in different fabrics. My dress hating DD found something there for a similar event. Sometimes found in New Look if you don't have one nearby....

She has also had success with soft trousers suits of that is an alternative. Also autistic!

What about renting something?

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 10/04/2026 16:10

They quiz. They are going into liquidation but I got a lovely dress in there yesterday for a wedding.

Have a browse on Zalando. Some plain comfy looking dresses within budget including milkmaid style and some jumpsuits too.

Have a look at Popsy. The children's sizes go up to 12-14 or the adult sizes start at 6. They're soft and loose fitting. Back in the days when autistic DD would countenance a dress (sadly she now lives in Nike sportswear) she would wear these. They are super helpful and will make minor adjustments.

This is probably too itchy (may be lined) but I thought I'd add it just in case as it's only left in size 6 and therefore attractively priced!

Monsoon? My 13 year old has a couple of weddings outfits from there in past 12 months.

I'd get her to try something on for fit and if she likes it, and then see if I could buy on vinted. Especially if she's likely only going to wear it once. But I hate waste and spending money!

My niece got her dress from M&S, it was dark green soft velvet skater style, she was 14 & it was from their child’s section.

I’ve just seen some milkmaid style dresses in Abercrombie but won’t fit the budget.
Have you looked at Gap? They have dresses on clearance that might fit the bill,

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/04/2026 21:32

Zara kids special occasion dresses - probably the biggest size but something might suit.

StinkerTroll · 13/04/2026 21:34

Another vote for Popsy dresses, they are lovely and soft, come in a multitude of styles and designs, will do minor adjustments for free and most importantly they have POCKETS (for me anyway!)

Ophir · 13/04/2026 21:38

Does it have to be a dress?

Ophir · 13/04/2026 21:45

A soft blazer set might work

Have you had a look at the girls Lipsy dresses on the next website? They go up age 15-16 and do skater style and similar.

My daughter never wears dresses and hates most clothes/fabrics. For my brother's wedding last summer she wore a wide-legged all-in-one jumpsuit in a cotton-type fabric that she actually loved! It was from Yumi.

nongnangning · 14/04/2026 00:06

Yes to @Ophir's shorts suit. My family member wore similar to this to a wedding last summer and it looked great

LoopyLoo1991 · 17/04/2026 17:13

My 'niece' (daughter of my sister's partner) had similar problems at the end of last year before a wedding. I'll ask them how they assembled an outfit, as they had to get various items from different places. It wasn't easy.

OrganisedOnTheSurface · 17/04/2026 17:16

Fully appreciate you have said dress but have you looked at skirt and top combinations or even floaty/ smart trousers and a top?

How dressy does the outfit need to be?

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 17/04/2026 17:23

My autistic dd who won't wear dresses wore something similar to this for a wedding but worn with leggings and a jacket. Basically a floaty mini dress worn as a top. The leggings could have just as easily been very thick tights, no one would have known without looking very closely and she felt comfortable which was the main thing.
