Anyone else in the process of growing out their dyed hair

Or have done it and can share some encouragement. I'm 4 months in and really starting to struggle. My natural hair is medium brown and has always been dyed a very dark brown which has now faded to copper.

Been through it and I'm now 100% dye free, it was a slog tbh.

I've been using box dyes on my hair since I was about 13. Got balayage about 5/6 years ago and the mix of box colours growing out and balayage wasn't great. So I just stopped colouring completely, I think it took about 4 years until all the colour was gone. I did have a couple of good cuts in that time but mostly just gritted my teeth about the colour difference.

Annoyingly my natural hair gets more orangey (I'm dark brown on top) towards the ends so it still looks like I'm growing colour out. I'm currently toying with colouring it again as it's a bit blah but I also feel like I spent so long growing the colour out that would be a waste!

I did sometimes think about using a dye on the bottom and bit touching any of the natural regrowth to blend a bit more but decided against it.

I think I'm about 3-4 months in and gave up the hair dye because they discontinued the one that was guaranteed to cover the grey and none of the others I've tried even touch the surface or end up making the grey really 'rusty' looking.

It's growing on me (pardon the pun), but my hair is short and I have grey around the tops of my ears and my 'sideburns'. That bothers me more than the Cruella DeVille stripe I'm getting at the parting because it's a nicer grey, if that's possible?

I can't afford to have my hair professionally dyed so I'm just going to stick with growing it out.

I'm on the other side and honestly it is worth it! Get lots of compliments on my hair and it is in much better condition, shinier etc

A purple toning shampoo is good for the silvery bits but it may also be worth visiting a hairdresser to help you with this difficult stage. They know how to tone and blend so it's more natural-looking. It would be worth it as once it's grown out you don't have to worry about colouring appointments or buying dye again.

Don't give up now when you have already dealt with lots of the annoying/uncomfortable part.

Yeah I am, it’s a silvery shade so not too different to the blonde I had gone when I went grey

I’m growing light blonde full head highlights out of my medium reddish brown hair and it’s currently at lower ear level (hair is shoulder length). I’m determined to keep going and then live with it for a few months totally natural but I’m not convinced at the moment. The health of the undyed growth is notably better, but the solid dark colour is a wrench after years and years of various shades of blonde.

I’ve just started but have wimped out and dyed my hair my natural colour and had almost silver highlights put in so it won’t look so obvious.

Considering half the reason I’ll grow out is to save money it’s not been a success so far😂😂

The copper fade is actually softening the line between the two tones which makes the grow-out look more natural than a stark demarcation would. Keeping ends well-conditioned with something rich in fatty acids and protein helps blend the texture difference between the two sections too. Hang in there.
