Is there a one stop make up consultation for women in their 50s?

I need to find some decent go to make up for both everyday and occasions.

I don’t have the time or inclination to trial all the different brands at different times, is there such a thing as a one stop consult?

I’m in my early 50s and I have reasonable budget for the right products, but I’ve never really been a huge one trialling different things, doing research etc.

MAC makeover?

satsumas26 · 08/04/2026 08:21

I think Bobby Brown would be a good option as cater to a more natural look

StillnessStill · 08/04/2026 08:21

Do people just get all their make up from one brand though?

I’d like to try eg multiple ranges of foundation but without the hassle of multiple makeover sessions

I want the same, not going to a specific brand counter for a makeover but a consultation with someone who can chat through all brands, John Lewis seem to do one which I’m going to book

Space NK is a good option for you OP

Agree with space nk. I went at the weekend and got some new makeup which is great and I wouldn’t have picked myself.

SquirrelFan · 08/04/2026 08:47

I went to Space NK and was 'made over' by a girl in her teens who clearly had a set idea of what a woman in her 50s should look like - I wound up with 80s coral lipstick and heavy sticky foundation - I went home and cried... This was a paid - for service - a birthday present!

Go to space nk. They are lovely, and helped me choose great make up

beguilingeyes · 08/04/2026 08:53

There used to be a lovely service like this in Dickens and Jones (anybody remember them?). I got a lovely Dior eyeshadow palette as part of mine that I still remember fondly.

I suspect she chose the lipstick to brighten your face. I find that people like neutral or a bright lip - you could have told her that wasn't for you. Personally I am your age and always go for a a lipstick like that as it lifts my face and makes it more alive. I see no point in neutral lipsticks that, on me are flat and deathly.
In terms of foundation - SpaceNK do not stock any thick heavy foundations. I imagine she used a formulation you are not used to - perhaps more moisturising. Or maybe it was the skincare she used under the foundation that you were uncomfortable with.
I agree - some of the staff are really far from the mark, but most, particularly if you guide them a bit, are excellent.

Any reccos for brown/ dark skin? I am terrified of those makeup assistants.

GreenSalon · 08/04/2026 09:17

I did the John Lewis one for exactly this reason and they were great.

IDontKnowWhatYouMean · 08/04/2026 09:28

My local Boots has fairly recently added a counter which is just for that purpose - the sales assistant/MUA is not attached to any of the brands, but selects from all the brands in the store.

Selfridges Beauty Concierge. Link is to the London store but I think all the other branches offer it too.

Why on earth didn't you ay something! It doesn't have to be confrontational.

I spoke up at Mac at Harvey Nick's I think it was. I just said "something like, ' that eye showdow isn't quite my style, I wouldn't wear it when I'm going out. What else would work'

Space NK is excellent, free and perfectly capable of styling women in their 50s. Give them a try.

Sellotap · 08/04/2026 11:21

Selfridges do this- you pay but it's redeemable against products.

CarbonArtist · 08/04/2026 15:52

Selfridges Beauty Concierge. The beauty hall is really lovely. You could make a day of it - get your hair done too and go to one of the restaurants.

Why are you dismissing OPs own experience? “She chose the lipstick to brighten your face” 🙄

calishire · 08/04/2026 21:25

I know someone that does make up consultations…. You have to be local though as they are in person… clearly a market for it though as she charges £189 for the consult. I think you then have to buy the makeup on top of that but she buys it for you.

No, I’m saying she is a grown up, why didn’t she say she was uncomfortable with bright colours.

It’s great if you know what you want but too large to browse if you don’t AND the biggest issue is the lack of daylight for colour matching and checking.
