Posh hotel trip outfit help!

Hello! Can anyone please help me find an outfit for a fancy date night in a posh hotel?? I am also looking for some nice daytime outfits for the same place if anyone has any recommendations.

I’ve put on weight recently and I just don’t know what suits me or how to dress my shape. I’m 5’5, size 12 with big hips and bum. I have an average sized chest. My waist is smaller but I do have a little tummy that I didn’t used to have. I was a size 8 for years and years and knew what worked for me but now, I have no idea. I’d like to look nice but also feel nice!

I tend to wear layers and cover myself up. I have lots of clothes but just nothing that feel nice enough for the location. Most of my clothes are well worn and just a bit sad! So my wardrobe needs a wee update.

thank you fashion gurus!

To add, I’m early thirties so would like to be reasonably trendy if possible!

But you haven’t said if the hotel is in the Highlands, or the Cotswolds, or Mayfair! Nor how much you want to spend.

But for dinner - this might cover all eventualities. If it’s well made it will skim over your body, so you won’t need to be worrying about every perceived flaw:

But this is probably more fun:

You can probably find similar dresses to suit any budget.

PhaedraTwo · 06/04/2026 00:58

Well they would if you like that style of dress, which I don't but as the OP has actually asked "how long is a piece of string" and this just appeared in my inbox, pretty much anything here will do for dinner and possibly daytime, assuming it's not a remote country hotel

Batsheva

And MN adverts are telling me I really need this dress.
Max Mara

I'm currently in love with this dress.

Thank you both! The hotel is Gleneagles, so country but I’d still like to feel nice. I have been before but feel my body has changed a lot since our last trip. I love the first Ralph Lauren dress but would have never picked the style for my shape so it’s interesting to see it recommended!

I am a typical jeans and trainers, cardigan/jumper wearer. I just feel nothing works for me right now and I’m panicking.

Unfortunately, I think Max Mara is slightly out of my range.

On Vinted the other day, I bought a brand new River Island quilted leather skirt with little gold buttons on. A wee bit short, but not too short. My teenage daughter said it gave Chanel vibes!
There are loads of good clothes out there and you don’t need to spend the earth 🙂
Most importantly, enjoy your stay!

JMSA · 06/04/2026 01:39

Also, look at Nobody’s Child and & Other Stories dresses. I also really like Never Fully Dressed, especially their Tilly dress. I love SilkFred too.

minnowonthesay · 06/04/2026 04:48

For day this Zara light khaki jacket is so much nicer in real life, looks great with Adidas olive suede trainers, t shirt and jeans. A jumper and thermal vest can be added if it’s chilly.
I do think evenings in hotels are harder, we’re away at the moment in the UK in a lovely hotel, some guests are very dressed up for dinner and some are wearing jeans. Could you wear a satin slip skirt with a satin cami and jacket? Or maybe wide leg trousers and the Zara silky wrap style blouse? Bigger jewellery and a bit of a heel can really make everything feel more special.

Gleneagles is a golf hotel, fairly remote, country and probably won't be full of very dressed up people. I don't have any suggestions as I'm a not trendy over 60s but I personally would go with a relaxed dress or wide legged trousers and a top. Don't over dress. Just be yourself.

butternut123 · 06/04/2026 07:50

I’ve a trip coming up and I’ve gone for daytime options; barrel jeans with brown belt, leopard print pointed flats, short sleeved thin knit jumper top, brown River Island mac coat (bought off Vinted) and gold jewellery from primark. Have a couple of variations of this including a cropped mac and feel very polished in them. For the evening I got some lovely cropped wide leg jeans in black from Primark and pairing with a black shirt tucked in and a belt, small heels and gold jewellery.

Doggymummar · 06/04/2026 08:09

I would really amp up the Scottish vibes. I have lots of country wear. House of bruar, lochmuir. Speyside and yesterday I got the most amazing autumn colours poncho at the bootsale. If you are buying new Holland Cooper would be a good starting point.

Aphroditesangel · 06/04/2026 08:16

You don’t want to be too dressy in Gleneagles. Think good wool, some nice blouses annd trousers and classy jackets. Try Broar and House of Bruar.

BadSkiingMum · 06/04/2026 08:18

Can you look online for any photos of the dining room or events at Gleneagles? They might capture guests in the background and give a sense of what is worn.

Personally I would go a bit traditional for that kind of place: velvet, silk or lace and bring out the jewellery.

Have you been there?

I've stayed once and would say the information on the dress code is accurate as to what people were wearing. The Max Mara dress I posted would be right.

Always makes me laugh when the OP clearly states she’s been before yet people still feel the need to educate her about where she’s going rather than answer her question which is what outfit would look nice on me.

It’s such a stealth boast. “Oh, I go there all the time and it’s not that dressy….” 🙄

I don't go there all the time but I do live in a very golfy place and see how people dress to go for dinner, even in posh hotels.

I must confess that I didn't see that the OP has been before and that is my mistake.

I also confessed to being older and not aligned with what a 30 something might want to wear for dinner.

I feel sure OP is smart enough to read all responses and take from them what she needs.

The posts from that poster read as if from someone who hasn't been there.

Gleneagles is smart, especially the formal restaurant.

Perfidia · 06/04/2026 09:23

The OP is in her early thirties.

She is describing the dinner as a date night.

And she will still be in her early thirties during daylight hours for the rest of her stay …

Perfidia · 06/04/2026 09:24

(Nb not a response to the post above mine, just generally.)

Edited

My outfit is fine. Far better to look classy than slutty.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/04/2026 09:25

Add maybe sequin or black blazer maybe with satin trim.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/04/2026 09:29

In the past I’ve worn:-

Zara black diamanté stripe leggings
river island black cami
zara short red cropped jacket
louboutins

You may find some of the above on eBay vinted.

By the way 80s style big jewellery is on trend as are brooches.

I think I have not really been clear what I am saying. I apologise for that. You definitely need to be a certain level of dressy for the formal restaurant bit, and I think this may be my age speaking, I'm not sure satin, sparkles and bling it's what is called for. Possibly a bit more restrained? Anyway I will bow out now and let the rest of you help to sort OP out.

@sunsuI hope you have a fabulous evening.
