I’m early 40s a need fashion advice. I don’t want to look like a mum who shops at next, I want to look trendy but not like I’m dressing too young. What are the staple items I need in my wardrobe for spring/summer?

I suggest you need to work out a style you like and then consider the key pieces you need to make that style, in colours that work for you, then you can update it each season with a few more trendy items. Just buying clothes because they are fashionable isn’t necessarily going to make you feel stylish if they aren’t ’you.’

There are loads of influencers who dress great, fashionably and in very different ways. Maybe find a few that work for you and adapt key looks.

Is that what people do nowadays - choose one particular style and restrict their shopping to that?

Could you not simply browse every possible site, get an idea of how things look and what they cost, and then pick things that appeal to you and fit your life?

Some jumping off points - for inspiration or more, depending on your tastes and wallet:

All mainstream, fashionable multi-brand platforms. They should help you to drill down to what you like and don’t like - and which brands you think might be worth pursuing, or emulating at a different price point. (From, say & Other Stories, Cos, Mango, wherever.)

(It probably does no harm to glance in the direction of Instagram - but getting dressed isn’t literal costume, the beauty is in the randomness of individual choice.)
