How to apply makeup after SPF which just sits on skin?

I have to wear SPF 50 every day due to melasma. I have tried loads and find that so many are a bit greasy/moist and never really dry. I have tried moisturiser with SPF (cerave) but my face is getting worse so I think I need an SPF as well. I can only use a liquid foundation because my skin feels so oily. I would like to look a bit less shiny! Do I need to start my routine 2 hours in advance? I don’t think I could do that! Any advice gratefully received - thank you

As a fairly oily/shiny and veryy sensitive skinned person I’ve found the La Roche Posay Anthelios UV Air the best for me. It sits well on skincare and seems to sink in to the skin the best and quickest. Having said that it’s taken me ages and a lot of recommendations and I know that what works for one person might not work for the next so I really hope you find the one that works for you!

I use the Biore SPF50 and it works great for me under makeup. You can get it and lots of other good options from most of the K-beauty stores online.

I am using one from the Korean brand Beauty of Joseon. Widely available. Sinks in beautifully and make up goes on right after with no problem.

I love ultrasun, it's the best I've ever used under makeup

Do you know which one it is yours is @3dogsnorth? I was having a look at House of Joleon SPFs yesterday and they seemed to have two options.

I find Biore works best for me

May I recommend a light dusting of Nars light reflecting setting powder after make up on the t-zone, chin and around the nose.
Makes everything much less shiny but not heavy or cakey.

I use La Roche Posay mattifying spf50 and then do makeup. I do have to use loose face powder after, I press it on with a cotton pad and off with powder brush. . No7 pro loose powder is good. If I’m too powdery I use a setting spray on top.

I just mix mine together so it goes on at the same time (Estee Lauder foundation with a factor 30 boots 'brightening' suncream currently) and I haven't had any problems. I always do this with whatever moisturiser or suncream I use and only once had problems with it pilling (can't remember what brand caused the pilling annoyingly).

Beauty of Joseon with the blue lid goes brilliantly under makeup and is quite cheap. Before that I was using Medik8 which is also great but more expensive. With both of these I've had no problem applying liquid foundation within a minute or two of the SPF and they leave my skin looking more glowy than shiny

I have melasma and you definitely need separate SPF50, not moisturiser with SPF in

Hi OP. You don’t need to start your routine 2 hours in advance. After SPF, give it about 5 to 10 minutes, then gently press (not rub) a tissue or use a very light dusting of translucent powder to take off that surface slip. That creates a smoother base so your liquid foundation doesn’t slide around. Also, applying foundation w/ a damp sponge or thin layers works much better over dewy SPF than brushing it on heavily. If your SPF always stays shiny it might just be a very emollient formula, so pairing it with a soft blurring/mattifying primer in select areas (like T-zone) can help balance things w/o affecting the SPF protection. Hope this helps.

The one i use is the SPF50 called Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice and Probiotics. Its so nice that today I am wearing it as a moisturiser. Hope you like it too. Best I have ever used and doesn't smell like suncream either

I’ve been influenced by this thread to try the Joseon spf and it’s 20% off at Boots!

I agree with this. I love mine and I’ve used lots of more expensive ones in the past. It’s a little over £10 at Cult Beauty at the moment.

Biore watery essence is SPF50 and is excellent under makeup.

WhoamItoday11 · 04/04/2026 09:59

I was told to use a mineral SPF and wait 5 minutes for it to soak in before the next step. In that time I either brush my teeth or do my hair. Just arrange your steps in your routine so you're not just waiting around for it to absorb.

UmberMoose · 04/04/2026 10:07

I prefer the LRP one as it sits well on my makeups. I have a routine with that.
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
LRP spf
Then makeup
Evening:
Cerave moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
