Would a Dyson-style hair dryer inspire me to improve my appearance?

I have long, fine, highlighted hair. Mostly can’t be bothered to blow dry it as it takes ages and a faff. Ends up slightly wavy and looks ok. Ish. Often wear it up. However … I want to take more care and look more “groomed” without having to spend ages at it. I am looking at those fancy hair dryers like Dyson. Would something like this make a difference and actually inspire me? It’s a lot of money but I’d probably buy used first to try.

Such a good question. My hair is bobbed I can’t comment BUT my 13 year old has poker straight thick hair down past her bra strap. Stay with me….she wanted a shark dryer (v v similar to the Dyson you mention) and we have a side income of Amazon vouchers so I bought one. We have had it a couple of years. She does use it now and then and the process seems to be, curl her hair. Put the section straight in to a roller and then use a bonnet overnight. Her hair will look lovely but it’s nothing ground breaking.
She does her hair in heartless curls much more often - sock curls are the best I think and it lasts all day after sleeping on it with a blast of hairspray. Her hair weighs a ton so sounds like your hair OP would hold it quite well.

on the other hand dd1 who has curly ringlets uses the Dyson every day to diffuse and it’s excellent but that’s not what you want it for! I think if I was you op I would buy a really good quality heated curls set and see how I get in with that hope that helps

I have the same hair as you and my Dyson in a box with lots of attachments has been used about 5 times since I had it- and I got it when they were new out! I still CBA.

I have a Dyson Airstrait, looks like giant straighteners but basically does the same thing as drying your hair with a hairdryer and brush. It is a one trick pony, only dries hair straight. I love it. Wash my hair, leave it to dry for a bit. Then section my hair (I do it in 3 horizontal layers) apply heat protector and a hair cream for frizz, it is easy.

You can use it to also rough dry the hair but I like to have as little heat on my hair for a short a time as possible. It is 140 degrees. You do need that glove that comes with it as your hair will be hot. My straighteners are GHDs and are at least 200 degrees as a comparison.

Loads of videos on Youtube of people using them. I cannot comment on the Shark dupes. At least if you buy from Dyson you can return it for a refund if you are not happy. I bought mine from them.

I have a Dyson hair dryer and air strait. The air strait is far better in my opinion. It gives a very glossy finish and is fairly quick. The only thing is if your hair is shorter it really does give a poker straight finish so can look a bit too straight if you know what I mean! But as your hair is longer it would be fine.

The question I guess is whether a low maintenance person is going to use it sufficiently to justify the price. What is the style you actually want it to do? ( as in a bouncy blow dry look for something else). Could you achieve nice waves with another tool ? Are there other ways you can look groomed without the expense ( eg nails ??) Sorry lots of questions.

To answer your questions. No I am a self called non groomed person - nails awful, don’t wear make up, and over 55 so I don’t feel much hope in this area!

I like when I’ve blown and sometimes straightened my hair as it looks nice and shiny. I don’t want curls. Occasional shaggy type waves yes. When I don’t blow it, I get that slight frizzy look which along with the general ageing and other stuff makes me not like seeing my face in the mirror, hence thinking if I could at least easily do my hair that would make all the difference!

I definitely have a CBA way of being and have been blessed (in my view) with good skin and barely any grey hair (it would look awful on me as my hair is fine - I am envious of women with gorgeous thick silver hair!).

I have recently lost weight and my self care focus has been on nutrition and strength.

It sounds to me like you can make your hair nice with what you have but you have to make the effort. I sympathise. I have an effective hair routine but it is time consuming.
You could work on making/keeping your nails tidy - they don't have to be long or even polished, just neatly trimmed and clean.
Since you have lost weight, you could look for some smart basics to show off your progress.

Thank you I think you’re right! Even with the best tools effort is still needed I know. I don’t think the money will be worth it, wasteful to have things like that just lay in their box. I am starting to buy some nice accessories which again I’ve never really bothered with, but I just want to look “naturally nice” rather than “done” if that makes sense. Vinted is currently my friend!

Ahhh ok. I’m 55 so a similar age and I’ve also lost a fair bit of weight. I was nipping to Sainsbury’s yesterday I was thinking about what I do to make myself feel pulled together. I have a serum and moisturiser ( because I have quite dry skin) and a cheap concealer which is quite sheer. Yesterday all I did was add that which took a couple of minutes and then a bit of colour on my cheeks and lips with a product from Jones Road called Miracle balm. It’s a very sheer balmy product that gives your face a bit of life. That’s it. Hair wise I have short hair so it’s easy but in my long hair days I might have tied it back. Other than that I’m not a nail person or tweakments type of person.

i think if you want to you can set a day for fannying around. I like a bath on Sunday night and will sometimes do a sheet mask but it’s all very low key.

Thank you we sound quite alike! Also thank you for that suggestion, I will try that. It’s funny because in the summer I take a lot of care of my face, despite the contradiction of liking a bit of a tan, and I use good quality sunscreen products, bit of bronzer, etc. And I invest in nice highlights so perhaps I’m less of a CBA than I thought. I honestly don’t care what others think, but care how I feel.

I have a Dyson AirWrap that I use for straightening my long, very fine hair. I absolutely love it. It's much faster than blow-drying then straightening and gets much better results.

DamnBuster · 03/04/2026 15:05

I second the Dyson Airwrap. A hair dryer is a hair dryer at the end of the day.

i have long fine hair too and the Dyson hairdryer just dries and straightens it, the Airwrap STYLES it.

Its worth saying though that looking groomed is all down to effort, you wont do it by trying to buy it.
