I don't know what shape I am any more

I have always, pretty much my whole life, been a pear shape with small boobs, wide hips and a big bum, and big thighs. I've lost a lot of weight over the last couple of years and just the other day I was measuring myself to see what size I should order for some trousers I was looking at online. I was a bit taken aback to see that my hips measured only an inch more than the band size on my bra! So clearly I'm not really a pear any more but I don't know what I actually am and what styles are going to suit me now. Looking at this picture, all I see is a big rectangular torso with no shape and then some more rectangles for legs, but I'm not particularly kind to myself and probably need some objective outside opinions. What shape would people say I am and what might suit me/give me a waist/make my torso look softer?

I don't know what shape I am any more

No, I've never been pregnant, I've just always had a ribcage like a diplodocus'. It was balanced out more when I had bigger hips but now it's really noticeable.

Somewhere between a rectangle and an hour glass. Bust - waist more rectangle than hour glass. Waist to - hips more hour glass than rectangle

I would look for clothes that fit higher on the bust. I would look for clothes with tailoring (darts etc) to give shape around the waist as this would accentuate the nip from the ribs to the waist to create more shape then flare at the hips

Something like this

I think clothing looking good is more about fit, fabric, cut, colour, length, pattern/no pattern than it is about body shape. You have a lovely slim figure. Your rib cage is completely fine. Your bra is absolutely terrible though! Your top is the wrong shape, colour and length for you. I hope that doesn't sound too nasty. What I trying to say is that you are great but the clothes are not.

HarlanCobenDogshit · 03/04/2026 10:27

You are me!

Inverted triangle. It's meant to be the 'best' shape as it is simple to dress.

Decent shoulders for clothes to hang from, no tummy and slim hips.

I wear slim fitting clothing, high wide legs either cropped or full length. Anything slim fitting over the hips excentuates the frame.

I avoid anything obviously suited to hourglass shapes, as I don't have to boobs to carry it off.

Would also recommend MM. I buy alot of her Zara recommendations as Spanish clothing retailers tend to flatter those of limited curves, hips and boobs.

Nopenousername · 03/04/2026 10:50

You have such a beautiful slender figure. But I would be worried about this big head of yours with no hair.

InconvenientlyMaterial · 03/04/2026 12:46

I have a friend with just this shape (inverted triangle/ slim athletic) and she totally leans into it by wearing short, often quite dramatic, dresses that accentuate her strong shoulders and show off her great legs. Like pp said, dresses and tops can hang off the shoulders with no bumps, so you can try interesting, structured designs.

As an aside, IME, people with bigger rib cages tend to be naturals at running.

CortieTat · 03/04/2026 12:57

I think a lot of this is in your head/your body image.

I look at your photo and see someone with a beautiful, proportional, feminine figure. With an added bonus that it’s very easy to dress.

The only thing to change is getting a good bra in the correct size. Bravissimo or Brastop.

JaneyDC · 03/04/2026 14:47

I am straight up and down with no boobs and no waist at all. You have more waist than me!

I would suggest..
A decent bra measuring. Try the boob or bust online guide. It took me from a 34B to a 30D. I buy most of my bras from victoria secret from next. My small boobs look much better in a proper fitting bra. Next, I'd try high waisted jeans. Wide leg, straight, barrel etc but not skinny jeans. Finally, a loosely fitted tshirt tucked in and a cropped fitted cardi over the top.

I said further up the thread that I wouldn't actually go out dressed like this - I just put something close-fitting on so people could see my outline. I wear that top layered under other things and usually tucked in to my trousers. I'm a very 'cold' person and I have to layer up unfortunately.

I did try Boob or Bust actually. First off it told me I must have got my measurements wrong, then it suggested I try a 30E. I went into M&S and spent about an hour trying different sizes on and the most comfortable one in the end was 30D, which is what I was wearing in the picture. I don't really know what else I can do, I don't live near any specialist bra shops and I can't afford to buy any more. I feel like the ones I have fit and are supportive anyway.

You have an amazing figure, lucky you! I think you have a great waist, so I would look at things that nip you in at the waist. You also have lovely long, slim legs so you could get away with some nice fitted skirts or trousers.

corblimeyguvnr · 03/04/2026 20:43

You don't look like a D or E cup.

I think I’m a similar shape and bra size to you OP. I think a plunge bra might be better and make you feel more feminine. I’ve always been a pear shape but since losing weight I’m more balanced but still need something to help balance out the top since my boobs aren’t that big.

I think embrace your new figure but try a few different bras. I found bravissimo to be the best in terms of fit. Then H&M. I had to go up a band size and down a cup size to get the right fit as I couldn’t get my boob and bust size. I would look at sister sizes.

WhereAreWeNow · 03/04/2026 20:52

I think you've got a great figure @ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop .
I'd call it athletic.
I would play around with proportions. Maybe some tailored trousers or high waisted jeans that nip in at the waist and a looser top tucked in?
Order some different bras from John Lewis or somewhere else with good range, free delivery and returns. Have you tried Freya and Panache? They're good for 30" bras.
I think you've got a really easy figure to dress so just have fun trying different styles.

corblimeyguvnr · 03/04/2026 21:01

I agree many people would be delighted to have your shape!

If you feel like the ones you have fit and are supportive, then that's great. Similarly to others' opinions, your bra in the photo wasn't showing the best support, which was why I suggested it. Try sister sizes to your BOB size and a plunge bra is often the most flattering for small boobs if you did want to tweak.

corblimeyguvnr · 03/04/2026 20:43

You don't look like a D or E cup.

D or E doesn't always mean big breasts. It's relative to band size.

DamnBuster · 03/04/2026 21:14

Hard to say, as you've taken the shot from low down, so this distorts the image, making the legs appear bigger and the torso appear smaller.

Body type identification is done from the back, so again, difficult to say but if i had to guess, I'd say either an H shape or a V shape. Inverted triangles normally have 'width/broadness' and long arms though and I dont see that in you.

Despite the above, you'll never go far wrong by following the lines of your body and if you can, make an appointment with a John Lewis stylist for some advice.

30D is really not a big bust.
OP you're a rectangle, you could benefit from draped clothes with details that give you curves. There are plenty of online style pages that can recommend styles. this one for example https://theconceptwardrobe.com/build-a-wardrobe/how-to-dress-the-rectangle-body-shape

You don't look like a D or E cup.

Cups are relative to band size and a 30D is a sister size (ie same cup volume) to 32C, 34B, or 36A. I’d say OP is spot on.

corblimeyguvnr · 04/04/2026 13:08

Ok thank you I stand corrected and better informed.

OP I would say your size is measured as 'fabulous'!

wheresmymojo · 04/04/2026 13:45

You’re going to want to do the opposite of what you did previously so basically keep your waist looking small but make your hips look bigger and that will give you great curves and draw attention away from your rib cage since you don’t like it.

whiteblackwhite · 04/04/2026 14:29

This thread is making me feel strangely depressed. Do you need to label your body shape? I have never even heard of nearly all of the body labels on this thread. You have a healthy looking body and an attractive one too. Why so harsh with these micro criticisms of your body?

Ditch the labels and negativity to yourself, find clothes that suit you and you like, and get on with enjoying all the great things your body can do for you.

RedRiverShore6 · 04/04/2026 15:07

I have a large ribcage and what I have found is to never wear a skinny rib jumper, mine is bigger than yours, but it's just one of those things as it is bone structure, you just have to draw attention away from it. I was asked once when I was younger, why have you got two sets of boobs.
