This dress for Spring wedding with "wedding chic" dress code?

Would love your thoughts on this dress for a Spring wedding at a nice hotel just outside of London, with a "wedding chic" dress code please.

I've tried it on and it fits very well and is flattering and can be styled dressier with some jewellery and nice heels. Is it occasion-appropriate?

I like it.

"mistake in the photo" = AI, as you can also see by zooming in on some of the hands and feet. Description also AI I think. Do you know the brand? I would have no confidence at all that I'd get what I thought I was getting unless it was a brand I had bought a lot from before

BlueRaspberry7 · 01/04/2026 09:06

@icecreamphoenix interesting, thats not great. I’ve never bought from them before. John Lewis sells them which vaguely increases my trust, but using AI photos is a problem!

It’s not ‘chic’ it’s ’wedding chic’ - as in ‘boho chic’ ‘shabby chic’ I’ve even seen ‘eco chic’ and ‘geek chic’.

It’s really not implying everyone has to turn up looking French, or wearing only couture. It’s just a way of saying ‘wear fancy, wedding appropriate clothes’.

I feel like Hope & Ivy dresses are the embodiment of current ‘wedding guest dress’ trends so I think you’d be absolutely fine. It’s a lovely dress. They have their own website if you wanted to look at other colourways

@ILoveDaffodillsi know the bride very well and never thought about this as being a rude invitation.

What an odd and negative way to interpret an invitation!

Surely guests can just wear what they want - I often wear something I’ve worn for a previous wedding.

The dress (both variants) is absolutely fine for a wedding guest - & Hope & Ivy is an established brand. I'm sure that the leg split won't be as noticeable in real life as in the photos - & I don't have an issue with the yellow flower & its placement!! I too think a natural fabric would be better though.

However, what really irks me about them both is that the front is fully embroidered but there's absolutely none at the back. It's a way of economising, but automatically cheapens the item. The back cut-out (if it exists!) cheapens the look further, IMO. It's a Jekyll & Hyde of a dress - the front tells one story, the back another!!!

I find that Hope & Ivy does a huge range of at-first-glance pretty dresses. However, they're almost all synthetic & the cut can be odd. The range they did using William Morris prints was much nicer, IMO, than their usual stuff. Some of those were cotton too - & you can do a search for cotton on their site?

If it's in your size, I much prefer this from Hope & Ivy. The William Morris print is beautiful, it's cotton, & the back cut-out & bow detail is considered & thought through.

And this - not William Morris but cotton & the print is beautiful.

Phase 8 wouldn't be my go-to shop, but it throws up some quite nice dresses occasionally. This has echoes of the dress you were looking at, print-wise at least. And is cotton.

It does perplex me that a maxi dress can cost only £36 - makes me think it can't be that well-made/good-quality. But it's a simple shape & eco-friendly viscose, plus the patterns are nice (one of them is from the Kew collection, though I prefer the black floral).

Gosh I can’t beleive people are attacking on style and beauty, over a simple wedding invite dress code. Is there nothing people don’t get angry about.

op, lovely dress, but the purple hope and ivy one is much nicer.

Nope! There's a lot of rage out there ... 😶

Though tbh I find dress codes a bit odd, & this one seems strangely meaningless/unnecessary. I would think that most guests would believe themselves to look chic - whether they achieve that or not is another matter (& one of personal taste!).

Did you mean the purple William Morris "Tulip" dress? That's my favourite too (though I thought I'd throw a few others into the mix, including other navy floral long dresses is that's what the OP was after in particular).

EleanorMc67 · 01/04/2026 20:55

This could be striking - though the pattern placement would be important. You might need to try a few.

I’m genuinely quite shocked, at the level and vitriol to a simple ask on style and beauty,

and yes, the tulip one, the colours are lovely and irs perfect for a wedding.

Polyester on the outside & viscose on the inside - usually it's the other way around! Striking print though, & in the sale.

Yes, it's strange. I don't quite get it. Nor do I understand why people are so very cruel about others' fashion preferences. A bit of humour, fine - but a recent post where one woman told another that she'd burn her clothes (rather than wear them) really annoyed & upset me.

That person's preferred style was not remotely mine either, & yes it would probably be considered dated by many (including women of around her own age or older). But she didn't want to be persuaded into wearing a Rixo or Reformation bias-cut maxi dress/ voluminous Toast or COS dress etc. She liked Phase 8/Hobbs/Jaeger shift or sheath dresses because she felt they suited her shape - so what was the point in berating her for how awful her clothes were & trying to coerce her into buying things she didn't like ...??

It was quite eye-opening, & has made me try to be more careful about my own comments ...

GoldDuster · 01/04/2026 21:27

I think the patterned front and plain back looks odd too as previous poster, it reminds me of a duvet cover.

I'd also want something that wasn't polyester, those cotton ones posted are far nicer IMO if you're after something flowery.

Agreed. Weird.
