Recommendations for affordable beginner running trainers for Couch to 5K

Can someone recommend me some decent, not too expensive running trainers for a total beginner? There are so many options I’m overwhelmed!

I want to start couch to 5k, will just be going round my local park so mainly running (or struggling to run!) on paths, occasionally on grass

This may not be a helpful comment, but I found my most comfortable trainers simply by going to Sports Direct and starting with their cheapest trainer and trying shoes on until one felt right! They were about £30, bargain! I think they are New Balance? They fit nice and tight so I feel supported, but also very cushioned.

I'd look at something like Brooks, New Balance or Saucony. If you can go down to your local running shop and try some on, they sometimes have last years models on sale or you can at least see what suit you and then have a look online. Sportsshoes.com are a good site to look at.
Good luck x

Nike Revolution are comfortable imo and inexpensive.

StasisMom · 30/03/2026 20:25

Yep - you don’t need fancy trainers and after a while, you might notice things like if you supinate when you run (ankles turn out) and so can get trainers to help there. If you do like me, New Balance 520s are vg and not expensive!

StasisMom · 30/03/2026 20:26

Ps and I always get my trainers half a size bigger than my shoe size, they’re more comfortable for me.

I’m 6 weeks in and started with some really old cheap Nike trainers that had been sat in the cupboard for 15 years! I only bought some new ones a couple of weeks ago as the sole decided to fall apart (probably because they are so old.)

I got these Adidas from SportShoes and really impressed with them. I tend to get bogged down in research and then can never choose and get stressed because Too Many Options, so I tried to just find a pair with good reviews and go for it.

Decathlon have some very good value trainers - it is all about your feet, not necessarily what works for someone else.

Do you have an outlet nearby? My entire family gets trainers from them (my marathon running daughter does get her carbons on line. I have fat feet, and go for Nike, whilst the rest of my family prefer Asics.

The Nike store doesn’t give any advice, but the Asics store has reasonably knowledgeable store assistants.

I bought really cheap barefoot trainers from Amazon. I was worried about putting too much strain on my joints and they really helped me land lightly (coz it hurts if you thump your foot down in barefoot shoes!).

I did it in under armour super charged in half a size bigger, they were around £30 from ASOS in the sale but sports direct sell them for similar. They have been great but mine were quite old (although underused for running Blush) so I now have brooks ghost 17s I got on sale for £103.
