Dandruff shampoo for 12 year old dd

Dd has a fair bit of dandruff, quite large flakes, what are good option for shampoo and conditioner or hair mask. As many tween/teen girls she wants something 'trendy' for her hair as they talk about it at school and uses L'Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Restoring products and sometimes Garnier Hair Food, which is popular for some reason among her friends.

Is head and shoulder still the go to product (she hates the smell) or do we have other options?

Body shop ginger shampoo? Then she could use a different body shop conditioner? Or even a trendy one lol

OneDaringHare · 29/03/2026 08:44

Dandruff is sometimes caused by seborric dermatitis, my son has it. The GP prescribed some shampoo and it cleared up in a few washes. It might be worth trying and as you only wash with it every 3rd day your DD can still use her trendy shampoo inbetween!

This is interesting, dd used to have eczema so could be this?

@OneDaringHare what is the name of your Ds's shampoo please?

If she wants “trend” then she that would be solid shampoo. I use the dry hair one from this brand: www.frenchsoaps.co.uk/products/sulphur-solid-shampoo-bar-dandruff-60g

Has anyone had good experiences with the ginger shampoo?

This is the shampoo the GP prescribed. DS has eczema and the usual lotions and potions weren’t helping, he had a flare up around his hairline and this stuff cleared it within a few washes.

Thank you @OneDaringHare. I bought this today, we'll give it a go. Dd's symptoms with her scalp being itchy and medium size flakes (tmi) this may well work for her. The lady at the pharmacy asked how old dd is as it's 12+ and if I had spoken to a doctor. I replied "Yes I spoke to someone" 😊- hope this is what's needed.

Could I ask how you use it? Having read the instruction it sounds like you just use it on the scalp, leave int on for 5 and rinse. This however don'ts actually wash her hair. Do you do a hair wash with a normal shampoo first and apply the Ketoconazole after?

DS just washed his hair with it as he would with normal shampoo, 3 times a week, which cleared it up. He used ordinary shampoo on in between days. I didn’t actually ask him if it lathered up like shampoo, I probably should have but he’s forever in the shower so I just assumed he was clean! He has quite dry, curly hair which doesn’t really get greasy, I don’t know if it will be enough on its own so your dd’s hair looks/feels clean but I can’t see the harm in washing properly first then applying the medicated stuff after she’s rinsed off the normal shampoo.
I hope it works for her, but the GP would be my next step if not.

Yes. My son had terrible dandruff & cradle cap like situation (cant remember what its called). Coal tar shampoo sorted it out in about a week then body shop ginger shampoo has kept it totally under control. Dd started to get a bit of dandruff and just the ginger shampoo worked.

SharonEllis · 30/03/2026 22:30

I was advised by a doctor to avoid head & shoulders saying it is very harsh on skin.

Came on to suggest the Body Shop ginger shampoo which has worked well for my DD.

klimala · 31/03/2026 18:41

DS can get dandruff, often triggered if he try’s a new shampoo. He uses the Inky List salycilic acid treatment whenever he has a flaky scalp and it always goes after a few uses. You just put it on your scalp 10 minutes before washing as normal.

PeonyBulb · 31/03/2026 21:25

Make sure she dries her hair with a hairdryer and not air dry as it can make a big difference to some people

But that’s how you use all shampoo though? Apart from the leaving it on, shampoo’s only supposed to go on the scalp, not the lengths.

Incidentally, I don’t generally get dandruff, but when I use the banana food shampoo my scalp ends up covered in white flakes, so it might just be that.

I’d suggest focusing on ingredients. For a medium-strength option like the cool menthol, it’s best used on alternate days and has a balanced feel. You can also try a mild anti-dandruff blend like organix, which has a more cosmetic feel and can be used daily for a softer, smoother result. If the flakes persist or seem more severe, a quick trip to a dermatologist can really help confirm what you’re dealing with and guide you to the right treatment early on.
