Seamstress ruined Toast Cosmic Print dress before wedding, seeking size 10

Help.......I'm getting married end of April, bought the Cosmic Print dress from Toast early last year, took ages to find it, Toast were brilliant and found two different sizes for me to try from their archive. 10 fitted perfectly. I took it to a seamstress last week to have the sleeves shortened a little, and she's wrecked it. Really poor sewing, sleeves hang badly, lumpy cuffs. Also has odd marks on it, as if put next to waxed jacket. Or someone wore it. I'm furious and really upset. Does anyone have it in size 10 that they would sell? Or loan?

Title by AI; not my wording!

(As I understand it you don’t have to cede control of your title to the AI!)

Can’t help with a replacement - but what redress are you seeking from the seamstress?

NearlyToothlessDragon · 28/03/2026 12:23

Can you not take the dress somewhere else for someone better to sort the sleeves out?

WappityWabbit · 28/03/2026 12:34

Sorry, can’t help with finding a replacement although if you can find a decent seamstress, you could get it copied?

Is it a stretchy fabric as I don’t understand why the cuffs might be lumpy? 🤔

Also, I’m guessing the original can be cleaned and the seamstress should be asked to cover the cost of cleaning and repairing the crappy sleeves by someone else.

Petrine · 28/03/2026 13:19

Did you discuss the issues with the first seamstress to find out what the marks are? If they’ll come out then I’d take it to another seamstress and ask them if it’s possible to rectify the poor alteration carried out on the sleeves.

The sleeves are lumpy where they are gathered into the cuff.
No time to get it copied, as well as no chance of finding that fabric, as wedding is next month!

Found via Google, but you'd need to check out the site carefully, I think.

Yes, I found that site; don't think it's legitimate. Reluctant to buy from them.

It's already been shortened at sleeve; not enough left to do it again.

Edited

I didn't cede control; I don't use AI. It just appeared on the post.

Could you post an photo of the sleeves on the sewing thread and they can give a recommendation of a good seamstress near you?

That should be fixable. A good sewer should be able to sort them out for you.

That’s ok they can just redo the cuff.

Thank you; much appreciated. I moved a few months ago, so don't know seamstresses here. I should have taken in something that didn't matter, to see how skilful/careful she was. I still don't know any reliable seamstresses. I also need to try to remove marks from where it was kept in shop. I've suggested Toast compile a list of approved seamstresses. They thought this good idea, but also tried to sell me replacement, which I'm considering, but that's paying twice for one dress, and would still have long sleeves issue.

I'd buy the replacement tbh if for your wedding

I'm mulling it over, but buying same dress twice seems wasteful, and I would still have the long sleeves issue.

As a sewer, that dress looks incredibly simple to replicate for anyone with garment sewing experience. It’s shocking that the seamstress you used managed to ruin it. I’m irrationally annoyed on your behalf!

However, I still think the sleeves can be re-done fairly easily by someone vaguely competent. Could you ask around on a local Facebook page for recommendations?

If they’re ‘lumpy’ at the cuff it just means that the person hasn’t taken care with the gathering (maybe used a overlocker and didn’t set the differential dial correctly?) but they can surely be unpicked and re-gathered. I would try that before buying a replacement dress.

TheGirlattheBack · 02/04/2026 17:42

That’s gutting. Where are you based now? We might be able to recommend someone to take it too. As others have said a good seamstress will be able to unpick and redo the cuff attachment.

Just seen this; sorry for late reply. Yes, I'm pretty sure she used overlocker.
Thank you for being annoyed on my behalf! It helps, somehow.
I haven't managed to find anyone to do it (well, I did, but she's just retired!) so I think I'll have to wear something else, and get Toast dress restored at future date.

Thank you; I live in Cornwall.
I think I'm leaning toward wearing something else; the joy of the Toast dress is somewhat diminished by this damned 'seamstress'.
I do think Toast could have helped a little too...
