Boots to fit orthotic insole

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 27/03/2026 06:53

I now have to wear orthotic insoles
I can find trainers to fit them easily because they usually have a think insole I can remove
I am struggling with boots though. I usually wear a doc type boot which I thought would be ok but they have a thin, leather insole and I dont have enough room from the base to the top of my foot
Im gutted as I have boots I love
Has anyone found suitable footwear for an orthotic?

What kind of boots do you want? I wear orthotics for foot tilt (Cerebral Palsy) and I mostly wear Reebok trainers (boys size 5 are cheaper than women's! But I have 2 pairs of boots that take them too -
1 smart black pair from Jones the Bootmaker quite a few years ago, think they wear officially called riding boots, but they take my insoles and are very comfy - something like this: https://www.jonesbootmaker.com/products/brook-slim-gabor-calf-fit-leather-riding-boots-gab28507-313-145-black

The other is for when we do live action roleplay and are camping in the mud and are similar to this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Womens-Leather-Lined-Biker-Ankle/dp/B014V9PM3A/ref=sr_1_39?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.jSktx06mo4and2YfWHTox1qS5Ex-w42DYtGX71xYDLk7sYEXKghmoIAF10Grdx-9R4gDfFA0x5aCpNO0aPQlOJKMXxc8-AKr9rRrb_VKyx755Gd3PTDKKbQS_yLuWBwdOaJJ66gINRgiYbWQpjiPlwz7DEZOWnpuH5t0SdgIsm0tFtLYp_cOOPsH2TImFOQQTcNxXQXR9V0Ex27QvCf58z_5EF7Q1zFhUG4o6ivvguwCw4gRVhFD-NHzMCZbfz6z-lUGKiOeceyMO1gsvhuZjOkdFWW0fV7dGC6YrWDqxIE.zMstGje0cgSYt35CLbvwM1yczOd_im40KoQ2YNqGxCI&dib_tag=se&keywords=brown+fur+lined+boots&qid=1774599828&sr=8-39
Although mine are completely sealed as one piece with only a buckle at the top, no side opening. They are brilliant it mud or wet and I quite often wear them for work in the winter as they keep my feet warm and dry waiting for buses in the pouring rain and snow, and also have fab grip for ice. I do sometimes take shoes to change into as they are hot and heavy!

I wear orthotics in Solovair boots half a size too big. Soloviair are the “original” DM factory (and many staff) bought up by staff when DM moved production overseas ten-ish years ago, so if DMs are your style, you’ll like these.

Seconding Widerfitshoes. I don't have wide feet but do need space for orthotics. I also have an aversion to pointy footwear and prefer something that is actually the shape of my foot. I bought these wider fit shoes buckingham. I used the 20% for new customers deal. They fit like a dream and I'm living in them.

Did you size up to allow for the orthotic?
Thanks

@WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere No, in fact they recommend that you size down. I'm usually about a size 6 but their 'fit finder' tool told me I needed a size 4 but I was within a mm or two of a size 5 so I bought a 5.

The boots came with 2 insoles which I took out to put my orthotics in.

Because our shoes are wider and deeper it may mean that you come down a size compared to the shoes you have been wearing. This is quite common and it is because our shoes are wider, so your feet have more space and don’t need the extra length. Please use the Fit Finder to help you choose your size and fitting.

Hope that helps.

I use arch support in soles inside Fly London boots which came with removable insoles. Very comfortable.
