What is the current equivalent of a bob haircut?

I have weird, wiry, temperamental mid-menopausal hair with a lot of wave (but cannot let it dry naturally as it just frizzes). I let it grow to just below shoulders, and had some layers put in (like a butterfly cut) and it was great! Then suddenly it morphed into a frizzy, oily AND dry nightmare so I just cut off the bottom 5 inches in rage on day. I'm seeing the hairdresser next week and need to go in with an idea of what to do with it.

I've got some grey at the sides and in the fringe, both of which I quite like and don't want to dye, but it looks odd as the rest doesn't have any grey in it.
I've had bobs in the past (like, in the 90s), but that looks so incredibly dated now. It also needs to be just long enough to put up in a short ponytail/bun, so cut has to be longer than chin length.

Any ideas gratefully received!

I'm 46 with fine hair. I have a short bob with no layers and straighten it so it's blunt. That seems to be a modern day equivalence to a bob with blown under flicks. It's trendy and easy to manage. If I leave it work a bit of curl creme to dry naturally it goes wavy and I then straighten the ends to finish it off. Similar to the pics below.

Thanks for all the ideas. Dead straight one length doesn't work for me as it really doesn't suit me at all.
I got it cut into a bob with a few long layers and somehow it's worked really well. It's grown quite a bit since then though. I think actually the problem has been finding someone who can do a really good cut!

Like I said upthread OP you’ll need to use heat tools/thermal straighteners as I do, but if you have thick wavy hair, this style (with or without fringe) is achievable, possibly with rollers too. Use YouTube to see how to use rollers to give body. I think this is very chic and timeless.

Good luck OP. I agree bobs for older women just look very uninspiring in magazines, etc.
Ive given up on mine (I could never get a chin length bob to sit right. Or if I did one puff of wind and it was a total mess again!).
and what is it about peri/menopausal hair that it manages to get really greasy whilst still being dry and frizzy!? It shouldnt be possible!

Im now just growing mine out til I can put it all back in a ponytail or bun.
oh, and hats....Im going to become a hat person.

Thing is, if your hair isnt short and it isnt very long then by default it's going to be a bob of some sort. I dont think a bob is dated at all. Feels like the hard work needs to be done by the products and styling that you do rather than the cut, due to the challenging texture of your hair? So experimenting or taking advice on products and styling tools might be what to focus on and just keep the cut itself simple.

Have you tried dry shampoo? Washing less often and using dry shampoo between washes works very well for my hair. I appreciate that it might not suit everyone, but I find it gives me a good balance between managing oiliness and preventing my hair from becoming too dry.

I don’t have any advice on the cut, as I find a straight, blunt, collarbone length bob to be the most flattering style for my middle aged, partly grey hair.

Ive had a bob for a while now and I love it. It does need to be styled but a baybliss big brush does a great job wth frizzy wavy meno hair. use redkin frizz dismiss hair protectant first and you can give yourself home blowdry 5 minutes. Nice colour is important too, i get a few pearly white highlights in my natural greying hair and a toner.
