Do you plan daily holiday outfits, and how do you rewear items?

Do you wear an outfit that you’ve planned for each day or just throw on what you fancy? If you re-wear stuff (eg you’ve taken a capsule wardrobe) , do you rewear immediately so once its done with you can pack that item away, or do you mix and match throughout the holiday?

Im just packing for a short trip and realised that although I have good combinations that lead to a few outfits, the problem is I dont like rewearing stuff if its a few days after I wore it the first time.

If you're going somewhere warm then take some hand wash and wash the clothes in sink or check if there's laundry where you're staying. That's what I would usually do.

hahabahbag · 23/03/2026 19:59

I do a bit of a count up if I’m not planning on washing and have plenty of luggage capacity. It’s harder for motorcycle touring as I have very little space, everything has to do double duty and hand wash and dry quickly. I carry handwashing soap for said trips

CremeEggThief · 23/03/2026 20:01

Just give anything you want to re-wear a good airing in between wears.

I really can’t be arsed with doing a wash when I’m on holiday but anyway I’m not going somewhere warm enough . Hotel laundry services are ridiculously expensive in my opinion.

I often take dresses that I might wear one evening (so only a few hours), and then for the whole day a day or two later. Will wear shorts or linen trousers for a few different days with different tops. Don't tend to re-wear tops unless do same as dress - wearing evening first, then do a daytime wear. Unless really hot and sweaty!

mdinbc · 23/03/2026 20:31

I think it depends on knowing your schedule while away. If you're going away for 4 days and know what you are doing each day, then yes, I can plan each day, especially if there is an occasion that needs nicer outfits.

If I am going for a week or 10 days, I will have a look at the weather and pack a coordinating wardrobe, eg. 3 bottoms with 6 t-shirts and 3 cardigans/jumpers that can be swapped around. That way I can choose what to wear each day depending on mood or activities.

If going for less than a week I don't tend to do laundry, if 6 days or more I will wash underwear, nightie and t-shirts.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 23/03/2026 21:13

I do the same as pp on a EU sun holiday. Wear a dress for dinner then that becomes the dress for the next day of activities.

If on a short city break I take one pair jeans and wear a pair to travel. Then three merino type jumpers with three vests for underneath. I then sleep in that vest each night.

When we went to the US with kids and hand luggage for three weeks, we found a launderette in each city and took turns doing a wash every three days. Very cheap and easy.

On a beach type holiday I will often try and rework and rewear Week 1 evening outfits as day outfits on Week 2. I’ve found this has been a more successful strategy since I’ve started dressing down a tad in evenings. I also took the plunge a few years ago and shoe wise, other than Birkenstock sandals which o wore in the day I only took x 2 smarter leather sandals for evening and alternated. So easy to pack and actually it was quite liberating having one less decision to make 😄 and I still felt “dressed up “.

Alyssa Beltempo on YouTube or Insta is great for doing capsule packing for holidays like an Italian ☺️ those ladies always look lovely

Sidebeforeself · 23/03/2026 21:44

I am fine at travelling light , but its not knowing whether to wear all clean first or rotate if you see what I mean ( not talking about underwear - I always take plenty!)

I can wear an outfit here at home to the pub for 3 hours, take to off, hang to up and wear it again the following week to go out for a meal

Items of clothing have only been on me for three hours max,

Same when I took beach holidays abroad, Id dress for going out to dinner, get back to hotel, hang it up and stick it back on a day or three later

When I was younger, you could only ever get one wear out of clothes cos of the stench of cigarette smoke on them after an hour or two in a pub

No stains, no damp underarms, ill happily wear again a few days later

Easterbunnyishotandcross · 23/03/2026 22:34

We only holiday in Scotland.. Outfits depend on whether 3 or 4 layers are needed! When you find an outfit that keeps the rain /sleet/hail /wind out that tends to be the outfit for the entire duration of the trip.

redboxerclub · 24/03/2026 00:48

I always rewear stuff and do all of the combinations mentioned above. I tend to have a selection of clothes and wear them and rewear them as the mood takes me day or night.
I doesn’t bother me if it’s a few days later- why would it.

I hate rewearing travel clothes though so they get worn and out in the laundry. But thinks that have been worn for a few hours are still clean in MHO! I do a capsule wardrobe though.

Yes all my wardrobe is pre 1975!

@redboxerclub I also never rewear what I have travelled in ( perhaps will wear it to travel back!).

I think Im going to take the “rewear and then consign it to the dirty pile” approach so I always have something clean to wear by the end of the holiday.

By the way , I have a fab T-shirt/top rolling technique which massively reduces the space my clothes take up. Im travelling Ryan air so every little helps!

It depends for me. If I'm only going away for a short trip then I just want to take a back pack, and that means rewearing stuff. It's not nice and I don't like it, but I value hand luggage/carry on over having a wider range of fresh clothing options. I once got unexpectedly stranded for 6 weeks with what I had in my carry on, it was an eye opener and I've done this ever since.

CrushingOnRubies · 24/03/2026 12:16

I do @Topbird29does and wear a dress in the evening for a bit then wear it the next day too.

I also take quite plain coloured bottoms so more tops can be worn with them.

This is what I do too. I also have some dresses/tops that I will wear as evening wear early in the holiday, maybe for a nice lunch mid-holiday, and I will reuse as cover-ups for the pools later in the holiday.

This sounds so anal but I also find it helpful to do a grid on paper with each week then day and subsections (breakfast/day/evenning - I separate breakfast and day as the former is often a simple but smarter dress and the latter might be a beach type cover up over my bikini as I hate seeing other people’s swimwear when I’m eating at a table, it’s so grim. Don’t care if that makes me a snob) then I plan outfits making sure I’m getting a minimum of two wears out of everything. I even write down shoes and accessories so I can see I’m mixing and matching so taking only what I need. I’ve found this very helpful to streamline my overpacking tendencies. O the take a photo and keep on my phone for when on resort.

Tue only exception is pants … I think it’s quite common amongst MNers 😄 but I can’t be bothered washing smalls when away so like to take enough for at least x 2 sets a day and spares so I could in theory shit myself several times and still have plenty 😂

@Sidebeforeself please could you describe your rolling method for someone who finds it just doesn’t work?

Mary46 · 25/03/2026 20:34

Great thread. Op we going to Toronto. I hate shorts as they too cropped so am thinking maybe denim skirt and good few t shirts. Maybe 2 days out of sundresses. Mix and match the skirt. Its hard isnt it what to bring. Shorts dont really suit my shape

I’ll try but I saw a YouTube video tube video which might be better for you .
Spread the Tshirt out on a flat surface
Turn up the bottom of the tshirt so you have a lip of a couple of inches front and back
Fold Tishirt in half left to right .
Fold sleeves back so you have one long line of tshirt
Turn the tshirt around 180 degrees so the lip bit is at the top away from you
Take the bottom ( the bit nearest to you) and roll it up as tight as you can working your way to the top
Once you bet to the top , continue rolling till you go over the “ lip” and then stop.
Reach back to find the other side of the lip and pull that down over the rolled up material
It should form a small folded up package

@Sidebeforeself thank you for writing it all out. I’ll try it out. I think (because it is a long time ago that I tried it) that I only saw videos where you just roll up the top. I thought maybe I was rolling too tightly, then too loosely, then gave up!

I like the capsule style packing - a variety of tops and bottoms that mix and match well so you don’t have to plan every outfit ahead of time and still be prepared. And with limited luggage space, bring more tops and fewer bottoms so even if you rewear some pieces it still feels like a new outfit and tops are lighter to pack anyway.

For packing more without paying for extra luggage space, compression packing cubes are a life saver - I have the ones that you pack them, then there’s an extra zipper to compress, like these ones, they genuinely save so much space! And once you start wearing clothes you can keep one as a dirty clothes cube separate.
