Frizz-Ease disappointment

blueirises · 20/03/2026 13:17

Why have John Frieda changed all the Frizz-Ease products? Not only have they discontinued some of my favourites, others (like the serum) now have a horrible smell. Any other recommendations for frizzy, wavy hair that I always wear straight? That don't smell like a pipe tobacco pouch?

Thank you for replying @MadisonMontgomery
I would prefer to go to a salon but I can only see one place that does it in Dublin where I live and is miles from me and they only open a couple of times a week which is a bit odd.

I have to be honest, I've used the Extra Strength Serum a few times and I haven't actually noticed a less good performance. I put on a tiny amount after drying and straightening. But I really don't like the smell. And if all the other stuff has the same smell, it's just really off putting

I do it the other way round - a couple of drops in the palm of my hand, lightly rub hands together, smooth onto damp hair, then dry and straighten. TBH, I've never really noticed a smell, but we're all different.

I use Aussie serum as an easily available option , they have it in boots and Tesco, I've used oh my gloss when my hair is straight and the curly one when I wear my hair curly. I saw a new one in Tesco this week 24 hours straight serum also Aussie. Might be worth a go, similar price to JF and Aussie stuff smells nice

Thanks, TheCurious0range, I'll have a look at Aussie stuff. Think I've used some before. That's what I need, a whole range and available in Boots, Superdrug etc. Just need to go sniffing!

Thanks for the recommendations, but they're making me realise how much I rely on Frizz-Ease. It was easy to get hold of, loads of different products, not too expensive, almost always on 3 for 2 or something... (I also loved John Frieda's Detox and Repair shampoo, but they seem to have marketed it abysmally so that it died a death).

I don't want something I have to buy online, and I need to replace shampoo, conditioner, serum and 3 Day Straight spray. Perhaps I've just been sucked in by clever marketing?

Can't help thinking they've shot themselves in the foot by changing products people really like.

You can get Colour WOW in M&S.

They have ruined the intense hold hairspray. It now comes out in a fine spray which doesn't hold the hair. It has a strong smell which now overpowers any perfume you are wearing. The aerosol can looks cheap and nasty too. I have bought the old style one for years and it was perfect but I won't be buying the new version.

UpTheWomen · 09/04/2026 00:06

I’m so glad I’m not imagining the changes! I use the extra strength serum followed by the dream curls curl crème, and since the packaging changed, the formerly delicious crème now honks like something’s gone off! Following your suggestions with interest - I have very fine, dry curls which I don’t want to weigh down too much, and need something which will diffuser dry with some hold for root volume. Sounds Impossible, I know, but frizz ease has worked for years.

Great name @TheCurious0range Or-ange!

Agreed! I sometimes think I’m the only one who remembers TMWRNJ. I considered calling myself Trevor the Small Faced Boy on here but didn’t want other posters to think I’m a man 😁

I really don't like the smell of Aussie products!

Blarn · 09/04/2026 08:36

Sheer Blond has changed too and I'm not sure if I like it. My hair feels icky the day after washing. Ive been using it for over 20 years!

I've used 'Frizz Ease' intense hold unscented hairspray for years but I shall now never buy anything from 'John Freida' again as their products have been totally ruined and they smell absolutely AWFUL.😠

Melarus · 28/04/2026 08:24

It seems so mad that companies do this. What can they possibly have to gain? Their longtime customers will drop away in disgust, and they won't attract many new customers because neophytes aren't often interested in familiar brand names, they want totally unknown stuff so that they can experience the thrill of discovery.

I suppose it could be that some ingredients have become more expensive, so they reformulate to keep production costs down?

Fun fact: the actual John Frieda was married to Lulu in the 1980s. She always had good hair!

FartSock5000 · 28/04/2026 09:05

Garnier hair food leave in.

Apply a small amount to your damp hair before your style/straighten it.

Apply more if wearing your hair wavy.

It moisturises and smells amazing.

Try Colour Wow

abracadabra1980 · 28/04/2026 09:23

I'm with you OP. Loved the volumising spray in the turquoise bottle-lifted my hair from the roots beautifully. Now, bottle is so boring but I'd say the product itself still works...

MrsW9 · 28/04/2026 11:52

I also switched to the Aussie curl serum a few years ago as I preferred the texture of my hair using it.

Sometimes I just use jojoba oil but have to be careful to get the right amount.
