Would you use skin cream (E45) which is 3 months past its expiry date?

I've got dry, flaky skin on my face, particularly around my forehead and eyebrows. There's a tub of E45 in the house which I haven't used for a long time. It has an expiry date of December 2025. Is there a good reason not to use it even though it's expired? It seems like a waste to throw it away, but I assume the expiry date is there for a reason.

Sudocrem actually burnt my skin. I forgot that was also on the banned list from the dermatologist.

I absolutely would use it.

I’m a massive cynic though and think expiry dates on this sort of thing are a marketing ploy to encourage you to chuck it and buy a new one.

OP, I’ve previously suffered on a number of occasions with something that sounds just like what you have: dry flaky skin around the eyebrows (I also had it around my nose). Moisturisers did nothing. It turned out to be about:blank Seborrheic dermatitis, which i believe is a type of fungal infection that lives in your hair. That’s why it tends to affect the upper part of the face (the spores trickle down on to your face, for instance in the shower).

the treatment is relatively easy there’s a shampoo which you use on your hair, which i think you can get over the counter. Please give it a try!

Hello. It definitely sounds like I have seborhheic dermatitis. I have dandruff as well on my scalp. The only shampoo that has worked for me is Neutrogena T-Gel, but unfortunately it was withdrawn from sale in the UK last year. I've not found anything else that works. Tried Nizoral and Polytar but they didn't work for me.

I suffer really badly with this and the things I find good are
Garnier Delicate Oat Milk Shampoo
Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Face Wash (which I also use around my hair line in the shower)
Aveeno Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying shampoo
Lush BIG shampoo

Leave the lather on for a few minutes like a mask. Rinse and repeat as many times as needed.

You are better off using Sudocrem than E45 if it is seb derm ime.

Wash your hair every day or at least every couple of days if you can, very thoroughly.
Never leave it to air dry. Dry it gently and thoroughly (low to medium heat and a cool blast at the end).

Oh also, after I clean my face, straight away I put a little dab of Vaseline on the places I get it the worst (nose creases, eyebrows). I have no clue why but it really helps.

Nannyfannybanny · 24/03/2026 17:51

Vaseline is a trademark for Unilever. The product is petroleum jelly, lots of much cheaper alternatives. Better in a tube, because you don't get cross contamination by putting your fingers in a tub. Recommended to me by a plastic surgeon I worked with for around the eyes.

Yes, it wouldn't remotely occur to me not to.
