What coat/jacket level are you at in London?

I am coming down to London in a couple of weeks time. I am currently in rural Scotland. Definitely still winter coat level up here. It’s been a bit milder the last couple of days but the wind is cutting. We’ve still got hill snow too.

What level of coat are you at in London? Coat, warm jacket, light weight rain jacket etc? I only have hand luggage so keen to bring just one jacket with me.

Medium weight bomber jacket.

jay55 · 17/03/2026 20:24

I’m at hoody level but most people are still in coats.

Got away with my pleather bomber on Friday…just! Today was glorious and wore a fine knit jumper with a cotton cropped trench over the top and actually had to take it off as I was baking in the sun! Evenings are chilly still though

CommandStrip · 17/03/2026 20:26

Thinnish jumper + Barbour.

Octavia64 · 17/03/2026 20:28

intermittent rain so definitely waterproof,
I went out last night with just jumper and lightweight waterproof ad was a bit cold

TheGander · 17/03/2026 20:29

Really hard to say because at this time of year it could change day to day, today it’s been up to 17C and sunny, but next week it could be down to 10C and raining / sleeting. Best check the weather forecast a couple of days before. I used the BBC weather website. I hope you enjoy your stay.

ACynicalDad · 17/03/2026 20:30

day time none, evening or rain something light

DelphiniumBlue · 17/03/2026 20:32

Yesterday I wore this M & S bomber jacket with a jumper underneath. Today I wore a very light padded coat and a scarf - I needed it this morning but by lunchtime was OK to be outside without a jacket, just a cardigan.
Wait and see what happens to the weather, but be aware that the tube gets really hot, as do some of the museums, so you need something light that you can take off and carry easily. I'd recommend layers, including a scarf that you can fit into your bag. Or a trench might work.

I was in my Uniqlo puffer coat today. It was bloody cold in the wind.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 17/03/2026 20:33

I really feel the cold and even though this winter has been fairly mild I routinely wore uggs with socks, yoga pants with cashmere trackies over them, a short down jacket with a longer one over it as well as hats and gloves.

Today it was warm in the sun but still a very cold wind. I brazened things out in just fitness pants and one down jacket but I still needed Ugg boots, hat and gloves. Other (younger) people were in shirt sleeves, shorts, crop tops etc. loads of people were eating outside. If you are used to Scottish temps you will probably be at that end of the scale - although last time I came back to London from Edinburgh it was noticeably colder down here.

DownTurpinRoad · 17/03/2026 20:34

I’ve abandoned the puffa coat of doom and heavy winter coats. I feel the cold, though, so still wearing a long wool coat (with brolly to hand at all times).

Mornings are still really cold.

mustwashmycurtains · 17/03/2026 20:39

It’s that exact time of year when I am either underdressed and freezing or overdressed and regretting bringing a coat. Not helpful I know.
in two weeks it may hopefully have turned a corner? Depending on your sense of style and where you feel the cold, I’d be inclined to go with short jacket/bomber or trench. Leave the coat at home. But bring warm scarf and layers and expect to wear them all. Keep an eye on weather closer to the time

auserna · 17/03/2026 20:41

It's tricky as mornings and evenings can still be pretty nippy. Maybe medium weight plus a scarf/hat. I'd just keep an eye on the weather forecast as it's still quite changeable.

tobysmouse · 17/03/2026 20:44

I was in a thin knit and jacket today to pick DD up at 5pm and it was nice in the sun, but a bit nippy in the shade and my friend who was just in a knit was complaining about being cold.

Definitely too nice for my big winter coat though!

Smallorveryfaraway · 17/03/2026 20:45

Lightweight long puffer, gorgeous in the sun but the wind chill still necessitates a coat. I nearly wore my short hybrid puffer (ie padded body, thermal jersey sleeves, think body warmer with sleeves) and I would've been too cold in that.
So changeable day to day, I'd plan for layers that you can adapt on the day to suit if I were you.

dastardlydani · 17/03/2026 20:45

it’s still cold & very changeable so in my puffer

Smallorveryfaraway · 17/03/2026 20:46

Oh, and I've only had my big coat out three times in total this winter, but the last time was this weekend just gone.

Justploddingonandon · 17/03/2026 20:55

Well today I wore my big coat in the morning, no coat at all at lunch time, a light jacket to pick up from after school club, then the big coat again after it got dark. The problem is if it’s sunny it’s warm during the day, then plummets when it get dark.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 17/03/2026 20:56

I was in a blazer today. Plenty of people in T shirts this afternoon!

theresbeautyinwindysun · 17/03/2026 22:12

Oh I’m so jealous! So jealous of the warmth!

Scottsquare · 18/03/2026 06:14

Thank you everyone.

For work I'm in a trench/car coat with some kind of jumper I can remove underneath. It's going to be 18 degrees this afternoon! For weekends Im either in a heavy denim jacket I've had years, possibly with gilet underneath or short puffer.

DiamondRBD · 18/03/2026 07:17

Agreed with others as well about hats and layers! I'm often wearing a lighter coat and taking my wooly hat about. We did also have one very cold day as pp mentioned. I think wool coats and trenches are good as you can stick a Uniqlo gilet underneath!
