Curly / wavy hair help please

I’ve got shoulder length wavy hair and whatever I try it always goes frizzy, especially at the root where it’s quite grey.

I’ve tried lots of different shampoos, conditioners, curly gels, creams, foams etc.

Im eyeing up merwave but its so expensive, does anyone have a cheap, fool proof method for nice chunky waves / curls that keep their shape and don’t frizz up?

thank you xx

This facebook group is very helpful. https://www.facebook.com/groups/496891315031159

I followed her method for my hair (fine, fluffy if I don't do anything, gentle wave) and it does work. She also doesn't advocate lots of expensive products. It is a bit of trial and error to find what works for you though... And for me it's more about the product application and then drying (or not drying) method than the actual products that makes the biggest difference.

My hair is super frizzy but gets weighed down really easily, and I can’t stand crispy curls. I’ve found Crème De Nature products work best for me, I use the curl cream first while it’s still soaking wet (comb through and separate into chunks with my fingers), then scrunch in the Smoothing Edge Glue mixed with tons of water. Then I stick a shower cap on while it’s still wet through and leave for 10-15 mins before I plop. That seems to stop the crispiness and frizz better than just straight plopping and diffusing.

I have used Merwave to 18 months. it is good, and 3 and 5 last forever.

But I have just started using Colour Wow for curly hair and it is great. One product as opposed to foam and gel and it seems to reactivate every morning when I wet my hair.

You don't need to bother with faddy stuff like merwave - you just need a sls free shampoo, silicone free conditioner and a good gel. Finger comb and scrunch the gel in while it's soaking wet to lock in the shape and diffuse.

You want it to end up up hard and crunchy, in a "cast" from the gel. When it's 100% dry, scrunch it all over to break the cast and underneath it will retain the shape that you set whilst wet but be nice and soft. I then use some hairspray over it or can end up a bit too soft!

I use Umberto Giannini shampoo and curl jelly gel but then just 80p Aldi apple conditioner, you don't need to go mad on expensive stuff!

A few things worth looking at ingredient-wise. For the frizz itself, look for formulas with glycerin combined with shea butter (glycerin alone can sometimes pull moisture out of the hair in low-humidity environments which makes frizz worse). For hold without crunch, hydroxyethylcellulose alongside something like flaxseed extract or aloe vera. That combination tends to give definition without the stiffness. I focus on ingredients rather than brand names because it just gives people more flexibility/you're not locked into one option. Hope this helps!

Try wearing a beanie hat or similar for 10 or 15 minutes.

I can never find products that I like. My hair ends up feeling sticky or crusty or greasy or like nothing was applied.

I found that wearing a winter hat for a short amount of time, on dry hair, makes my frizzy hair soft, smooth and frizz free.

Worth a shot.
