Shampoo/conditioner for regular swimmers?

I’ve started swimming 2-3times a week (at least x2) and as such my hair washing now mostly happens in gym showers.

I realise I might need something more protective and/or nourishing shampoo/conditioner wise. There’s loads on google but I’ve no idea which are any good, has anyone got any recommendations?

I have long, thick hair so do get through shampoo so nothing super expensive (‘things you get in Superdrug’ price point, I’m currently using elvive for reference.)

ideally available in normal/smaller but not travel size sized bottles as they will live in my gym bag.

I don’t dry my hair at gym or I’d be there all day so not averse to a leave in hair mask or something, as I leave with wet hair and blow dry at home.

I swim about the same frequency and use this stuff which I buy on amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001LFHYW0?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

I love the smell and it seems to be really good at getting the chlorine out of my hair and keeping it in good condition. A bottle lasts me about a year, but we're in a soft water area so don't need loads to get a decent lather. They do a matching conditioner too, but I just use something ultra-moisturising that's on special offer at Boots. I also really rate the Decathlon towel turbans and always keep one of those in my bag because I also travel home with wet hair and blow dry at home.

Philip Kingsley Swim Cap is very good.

i use Child’s farm 3-in-1; it’s the only thing I’ve found that get the smell out! Or wear a swim hat?

FirstDayonthePlanet · 16/03/2026 13:35

Thanks! I’ve got the child’s farm and the amazon ones in my basket for consideration.

The Philip Kingsley looks good but out of budget.

re: using a cap; I do use a fabric one for swimming, but afterwards I go and lounge about in the hydropool and go under those spouts that pummel shoulders, which I remove the cap for (slash it would get pummelled off!). This bit seems more chlorinated than the actual pool - makes my eyes sting and hair smell.

I'm interested in your fabric swim hat @FirstDayonthePlanet. Could you tell me where did you get that? I hate the stretchy silicone ones and find they give me a tension headache.

I also wonder do you soak your hair in the shower before you get in the pool? A regular swimmer with beautiful hair gave me this tip years ago - if you saturate your hair with clean water before you get in the pool it has less capacity to absorb the pool water. It sounds like you might be doing the opposite and keeping your hair dry until you get in the hydropool which does tend to have higher chlorine levels than a swimming pool?

@cottingleyfairy - I've never heard of Philip Kingsley swim cap but it sounds good. It's on special offer in boots just now for £18.75 too.

Do you need a separate conditioner with the Child's Farm 3-in-1 shampoo? I'm wondering if this would be a good option for kids with long hair who don't have the patience for conditioner after swimming!

I honestly can’t remember where the swim hat came from I’m sorry (not in my Amazon history but I’m sure they’d sell them).

I got it for daughter who also has long thick hair; it’s been knocking around in the swim bag for years. But it’s stretchy Lycra type material, much easier to get on than the silicone ones.
I remember having a rubber one at school that (felt like it) ripped my hair out when I took it off. It also eventually perished and stuck to my head leaving bits of yellow rubber stuck to my head for the rest of the school day. Core memory Confused

I only wet my hair beforehand if I’ve been in the gym, but maybe I’ll try doing it as a matter of course if that might help, thanks for the tip.
