Over the last 6 months life has hit me pretty hard and I’ve totally lost my way. I’m a single mum of 4 ranging from 16 to 2yrs. I want to get me back so my question is how do you look after you? Skincare hair care make up stuff like that. Also I need to start with vitamins I need something to wake me up thankyou

I’d start with a good vitamin D, magnesium, and creatine.
A vitamin C serum for your face and retinol/tretinoin is good.

Start with looking at your diet - are you eating healthily? You can take an A-Z multivitamin but it won't undo an unhealthy diet.
Are you relying on snacks and biscuits to keep you going.
Are you drinking too much alcohol?
Are you drinking enough water?
Do you do any exercise - e.g. do you walk every day even if it's only 20-30 mins?

Skincare-wise, make sure you are clean. You will feel better when freshly showered with clean hair.

If your budget is tight, go to Aldi. The Lacura moisturiser is great.

Most of us look better with a little make-up. You don't need a full face of slap for every day unless you want to.

Get your hair cut according to how it behaves. A good hairstylist will be able to cut it to a style that suits you and is easy to maintain.

Diet is shocking to be honest definitely not enough water. I’m trying to change that. Don’t drink or smoke exercise is definitely not enough but it’s swings and roundabouts I don’t eat properly so I can’t be arsed to look after myself which makes me feel worse then it goes round again. It’s a circle I need break. I don’t need to worry too much about budget re products and I do keep on top of my roots eyebrows wax and tint.

Eating crap is terrible. I made that mistake today and I feel washed out because of it. Ate junk then ate more junk.

Foodwise, don't buy junk. I don't normally have food noise but cake or ice-cream in the house will be chattering away at me until it has gone.

I'd look at cutting down on carbs and UPFs, up the veg - plenty of greens and colours. Aim for at least 5 a day. Eat an apple or banana or yoghurt not cake or biscuits etc.
If a journey is less than 2 miles, try walking. Depending on where you are going, it might be quicker.
If you work, go for a stroll at lunchtime.

Have a look at your make-up stash and get rid of what you don't really like.
Treat yourself to some new stuff. It's a new season so a good time to refresh your look.

It’s more takeaway and convenience food I’m terrible for and fizzy pop. I do cook and buy a food shop but I just feed the kids then it’s baths and bedtime routines by the time I’ve done everything I’m knackered and order myself takeout. I buy myself lovely make up and lotions and potions with good intentions and then I’m too tired

I have a stash that I need to cull.

How many of your DC need bathing and bedtime? Do they need daily baths?

elm26 · 14/03/2026 18:44

I take vitamin D high strength, vitamin C, biotin as well as ashwaganda and lions mane.

I cleanse with Clinique take the day off balm (even if I haven’t worn make up) then I use Laneige Cream Skin as a toner then one small pump of Clarins Double Serum (I do this twice a day, morning and before bed).

I also have microneedling with hyaluronic acid serum and a facial every 6 weeks which I love, I’m 33 with 2 kids under 3 and have always had oily skin, big pores etc and all of this has made a huge difference.

I’m confident in going out with just mascara, a lip balm and a tiny bit of liquid blush when before I’d never leave the house without foundation etc.

I used to drink tons of full fat coke, I really don’t enjoy water so now I drink Apple & Blackcurrant Robinsons. Still not great but tons better than fizzy. I love really cold drinks so I fill my Stanley with cold water from the fridge and add squash in. Cutting out fizzy drinks is huge for your skin.

elm26 · 14/03/2026 18:47

Forgot to add that I use factor 50 face sun cream every day even in winter! Rub the excess on the. Ack of my hands.

StationJack · 14/03/2026 18:52

Cutting out fizzy drinks is huge for your skin. - why is that? I don't really like fizzy pop other than an occasional G&T but will drink squash in the summer. I quite like a hot blackcurrant squash in the winter but not had any for ages.

The facial sounds nice.

Chaoshastakenover · 14/03/2026 19:14

A facial sounds bliss. 2 older dc bath or shower themselves the 2 younger ones probably don’t need to bath every day but it’s part of their nightly routine I could probably cut them down to every other day. I know if I sort my diet out and start taking vitamins I will feel better from the inside and that will spur me on to looking after the outside of me I just feel old and haggard. I have tried the Elmeis cleansing balm I will have a look at all the vitamins suggested thankyou

Treat yourself to a facial and use it as an excuse to cut down on takeaways. Smile
(Flowers for tomorrow for you.)

Chaoshastakenover · 14/03/2026 19:39

I will do 😊 if I save my take out money I could have a full spa day I need to start thinking of me a little bit more I hate looking in the mirror at the minute I’ve just done a boots order for vitamins and some other bits so that should be here tomorrow

This Is how I feel at the moment, hate looking at myself and have really let myself go.
A bit time consuming but if you can find 10 mins a day facial Yoga/massages are great, I started them about 2 weeks ago.
Just search face massage on YouTube and loads will come up.
Diet is definitely a big one.
I hear collagen boosting foods are a really benefit to skincare, things like bone broth and egg whites.
Good fats - avocados/nuts/olive oil.
Glowing skin would be things like carrots/papaya/mango.
Berries,leafy greens.
Pumpkin seeds.

I’ve been trying to incorporate these things into my diet recently, as well as cutting down on takeaways/upping water intake.

Lots of reasons! I do love a hot blackcurrant also! X

For skincare when life is genuinely hectic the only routine that actually sticks is one so simple you can do it half asleep, so a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer with SPF in the morning, and something nourishing at night is honestly all you need to start seeing a difference, and on the vitamins front vitamin D and magnesium are the two most commonly depleted in people running on empty and both can make a noticeable difference in energy and sleep quality which is probably where you need the most support right now.

I use a lot from here. It's what they use in the spa that I go to once a year and so all the products feel like you're having a spa treatment 😍

Also, Emma Hardie cleanser smells amazing and is great for taking make up off at the end of the day with a hot cloth. I just get it from Amazon as it's usually cheaper.

If you’re struggling with diet what about trying one of those food delivery companies like hello fresh? Have never tried them but have heard good things. It can be pricey but often they have introductory offers which could help you break the cycle.

you could spend ££££ and lots of time on skincare but if I was you I would stick to the basics until you get i to a routine.

Boots especially have a large range of basics for all skin types. You would need cleanser, vit C, moisturiser and spf as the basics. I used lots of different brands but over winter have used Byoma and I really rate their products. Very simple but a great place to start esp if you have dry skin.

I wouldn’t over complicate things. Once you’ve made a couple of changes and they are sticking then add more like exercise, 3L water etc.

The change most likely to have the biggest impact is your diet.
