What has the hairdresser done to my hair and can I do it at home?

Just had my hair cut, and before she started, the hairdresser suggested using “a henna treatment” to make it less coarse and frizzy (my hair isn’t in great condition at the moment, and is very frizzy when left to its own devices).

Anyway, it looks and feels amazing now, so I want to know what she did, and whether I can buy the same stuff and do it at home (or will this current loveliness last for a while?).

I’m too socially awkward to have asked her any questions, but here’s what I know:

> It cost £12. There were 2 other options, one of which was £18

> She didn’t ask whether I had any allergies

> She did it after shampooing (and rinsing), and left it on for about 10 minutes. She rubbed it really well into my scalp and was very careful to wipe any residue off my skin

> After drying my hair, she used Black Caviar and Moroccan Oil, but I don’t think those were related to the henna thing

Does anyone know what she might have used?

Did it change the colour (even slightly) of your hair or just the feel?

Are you sure she said henna? That's normally used to dye hair not condition it. Also doesn't the salon have a price list for treatments you can check?

It looks the same colour as before, I think - it’s a bit hard to tell because my hair is fairly dark brown anyway, plus being smoother is making it look a bit darker.

Hit post too soon. I’d be really surprised if she used henna or toner on your hair - it requires a patch test and most hairdressers wouldn’t skip this. Sure you didn’t mishear and she just said a ‘treatment’ - which is essentially an intense conditioner.

Edited

I think she said henna. I thought that was used for dyeing as well, so I was confused.

They do have a price list, but it doesn’t list the treatments, as far as I can see. It only lists the things you can book in for, whereas this was more of an extra thing you could get done while they washed your hair.

Hemp mask maybe?

Yeah, I thought they’d be careful with henna and allergies. They’re generally quite careful with things like that - I’ve been in before and heard them talking about doing patch tests etc, so it’s not like they’re generally sloppy about things like that.

Oh, she might have said hemp rather than henna, and I misheard. What does a hemp mask involve?

Just phone the salon now and ask. It’s much easier to ask on the phone than in person if you feel anxious. They can’t see your face being anxious or any hand twisting or anything!

Yes, probably just a treatment. Try the L’Oréal Elvive Glycolic Gloss 5 min lamination (supermarkets, Boots etc). It’s lovely and makes my hair so soft and healthy looking :)

And if you do find out, can you come back and tell us as it sounds like the perfect thing I need 😆

LaMarschallin · 14/03/2026 15:28

Maybe a misheard Wella treatment?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/03/2026 15:28

I was going to suggest was it Henna Wax?

Lovely conditioner , thick white cream type .

Henna ( the dye ) is a powder and looks like cows' pooh . Smells like a vegetable ash ( or Lush one smells like Turkish Delight but it's not pure henna )

BelfastSmile · 14/03/2026 20:36

I think people saying the henna wax mask are right - reading the directions, it does sound like what she did.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I might try a hemp mask and the l’Oriel stuff as well!

It's likely clear henna if it was a paste but if it was a cream mask - probably just some commercial product that has a bit of clear henna as one of the ingredients.
