Shopping (and more importantly, styling) the wardrobe

I’m wondering if I can style some of the trousers I wear to teach yoga in a way that makes them suitable for working in secondary schools. Specifically, I have a couple of pairs of Buddhapants (which I know will attract opprobrium here because they’re dropped crotch, but they work for me). On their Instagram, the brand sometimes share a ‘how we’re wearing’ piece with suggestions for styling the trousers to go out for the evening or some other smarter context than the festival, beachy vibe they picture on the website, but they don’t include pictures of the outfits being worn.

Could I get away with wearing these with more structured shirts, jackets, and shoes and make them vaguely suitable for a more professional context? Or am I fooling myself? For more context, mine are black and a sort of warm-hued, quite pale pink.

Could you wear a long black duster coat with no sleeves over them?
So cover them up?

Otherwise I would say no. They can't be smart.

RampantIvy · 12/03/2026 07:25

Sorry. I don't think that style ever looks professional.

Honestly, no, I don’t think they will transfer. They look too obviously yoga / exercise pants and no smart jacket in the world will change that.

I feel your pain as I have flared yoga pants that are probably the most flattering item I own and I’d love to wear them as normal trousers. I’ve tried various tops and boots to dress them up but the fact remains they look like yoga pants. And everyone would know it.

This is a source of lasting regret 😄😄

No, they’re not smart enough for working in a school.

PinkPomeloFruit · 12/03/2026 07:28

No.

Take a look at the styling of relevant ‘trousers’ on Paloma Wool.

Even so, I would not advise pursuing this wardrobe option in a school. Children are not sophisticated - they will, frankly, laugh at you.

What is the reason why you would want to do this? A health issue, (surely not if you are fit enough to teach yoga), or economy? Do you need directing to:

Balloon is a great idea @Gettingbysomehow

watchingthishtread · 12/03/2026 09:37

No. No amount of styling will make them suitable.

I’m not looking for alternative suggestions, cheers, I have options, but keen to maximise the use of things I already own and find comfortable. I’ll try and use them more on non-school days instead.

@MsAlignment thanks, no, I have work.
