Face cream similar to blue tin Nivea.

I love how the old blue tin Nivea feels on my skin. My skin can be tight and dry and Nivea provides instant relief.

But now that I’m learning about skincare, I can see it doesn’t have any ingredients that will improve my skin long term and that the strong fragrance is probably not great for it.

I’d tried a few other rich creams but nothing gives the same relief. Any suggestions?

Nivea q10 is really nice. Similar feel but sinks in better.

Stillhere83 · 10/03/2026 07:51

I love the blue tin Nivea, and i've actually seen it tested for improving your skin alongside Creme de la Mer and come out on top. Just use it alongside other things if you want to add some fancy ingredients.

I also use The Inkey List's Bioceramide moisturiser which is quite rich.

Aqueous cream

You are joking surely.

Aqueous cream is an emollient for washing with.

Absolutely. It shouldn’t be left on the skin as it contains SLS, which is a surfactant. Dermatologists hate it.

That's not true. I had a terrible outbreak of eczema 10 years ago due to stress and I was prescribed aqueous cream by a top dermatologist in Oxford for washing with and for putting on my skin to relieve the itchiness. I used it for months and literally caked myself in it.

For washing with it is fine and is prescribed for dry skin conditions and eczema. However, it should be washed off and not left on the skin for the reasons I gave. The trouble is that hospitals see it as a cheap cream and do use it to be left on the skin and dermatologists ask them not to.
OP asked for a moisture cream.

Things may have moved on in ten years though. Whether a person is in Oxford or not. It’s the ‘go to’ for eczema because it’s cheap as chips.

Aestura atobarrier cream. I got mine on Amazon - Korean brand. I have dehydrated skin which can be spot prone and it’s been amazing.

Look for a face oil and/or serum. My skin is terrible after swimming. Great thread, as I want to find a tube of something (that won't leak) to go in my swimming bag,

Petrine · 10/03/2026 10:06

If blue tin Nivea feels good on your skin then I'd continue to use it OP. I'm 70 and have used it from when I was a teen - my skin is in very good condition!

Aqueous cream

It’s made of paraffin! Why smear that on your face? Or anywhere else for that matter!

Isn't most of the face cream stuff hype? Years ago there was a comparison done between ingredients in Nivea and Creme de la Mer. There was very little difference!

Yeah none of it works long term but it works if you use it all the time. SPF on the other hand does work long term...

MuffinCoffee · 15/03/2026 10:01

Retinol is the only thing that can help skin,
you can still use Nivea cream for moisturizing but a facial sunscreen in the day time is a must if you use retinol at night.

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/03/2026 10:06

Nivea Soft has a lighter fragrance and sinks in better. It feels gorgeous as it goes on, has a slightly cooling feel to it. Use it with a facial spf in the summer months.

It's also a moisturiser. 🤷‍♀️

So is Nivea Blue...🤦‍♀️

These are all occlusives. They are not moisturisers. They create a barrier to keep moisture in, but the moisture needs to be there in the first place. You need to use a water-based moisturiser FIRST. Then an oil-based barrier cream on top, but only if you need it.

Flatinbed · 16/03/2026 16:42

Which water-based moisturiser would you recommend? I use weleda skin food and my skin is still hydrated by the end of the day.
