Beauty recommendations for those who don't want/can't afford 'tweakments'

I need to caveat this by saying that I don't think there's anything wrong with Botox/fillers etc., they're just not for me and I can't really afford them anyway. I just thought it might be nice for us all to add our personal recommendations of products we love. They won't be for everyone, but I love seeing what other people find helpful.

For me, I'm loving Nip and Fab products at the moment, they make my skin feel lovely.

For my menopausal skin which is usually so itchy it literally ruins my day, I LOVE this Aveeno body lotion. There are a few, but this is the one that works best for me.

Still haven't found a really good glycerine free hand cream that dries really quickly so if anyone can recommend one I would be grateful.

Confession .. at aged 59 I had some filler in the vertical lines above my lip.. at 61 still working well
For last 2 years I have had skin needling with a very experienced dermal therapist .. it works really really well fine lines.( 3months month;y treatment cost about £350.00)
i haven’t used Botox or any other filler.
I have a facial every 4-6 weeks same dermal therapist. She uses LED.. I bought a home one which rather embarrassingly sits in my draw. The facial costs £80.00
I use sunscreen religiously .. hands neck and face summer and winter on all but the dullest of days.
its expensive .. but cheaper than Botox and it works !

I like your examples OP. Cant think of any topical products off the top of my head but I've been using skin, hair and nails supplements for a long time.I will caveat this by saying I don't have perfect skin/hair /nails but definitely feel long term supplement use is helping general strength and health of these.

A good retin A

I'm here for ideas. I ditched hyaluronic acid after posting here and my skin is much better. I use a vit c oil morning and night, aveeno oat balm cream in the morning and weleda skin food at night. Simple cleanser if I wear make up and a nice hot flannel wipe every night. And so many creatine capsules I rattle. Skin has never looked so good (I'm 47).

Can I ask what is the issue with hyaluronic acid? I haven’t heard anything negative.

It just doesn't work for me, it actually dehydrates my skin.

Iron supplements (Ferroglobin specifically) - I think they’re actually making my hair grow. I always lost a lot of hair before and had thin hair as a result. Now I have new growth. I’m also taking biotin so that may be playing a part.

Paula’s Choice BHA liquid. Great exfoliation and really brightens up my skin. Caveat: I have tough oily acne prone skin, I suspect it might not be great on dry fragile skin.

Milk jelly lip stain - recommend for those with pale lips, quick dab makes me look much less dead and it lasts longer than other lip colours. Bit drying but not terrible.

Have you been using it on damp skin? If not, give it another go. HA will take all the moisture from your skin otherwise, as you have found. One exception to this is the amazing Hada Labo Lotion Intense which is extremely good and you can put straight into dry skin

Makemineacosmo · 08/03/2026 08:30

Never heard of milk jelly lip stain but will definitely investigate that one.

I do take supplements too. Omega 3, milk thistle, Vit D with K2 and a probiotic. I do think the probiotic makes a difference but no ideas about the others to be honest. Every time I have blood tests my ferritin levels are high, hence the milk thistle.

I really need a decent eyebrow product that isn't 'obvious' if anyone can recommend one.

It isn’t glycerin free but I have been using La Roche Posay Cicaplast Mains when I get into bed at night and my hands are looking better. I’m 59. I also put facial sunscreen on them during the day.

About twice a week I use Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask and my skin looks plumper and healthier the next day.

Squirrelsnut · 08/03/2026 10:56

Men's beard dye on my eyebrows. Lasts ages and more colours to choose from.
A good little 'suite' of supplements. I think vitamin D is non-negotiable.
Unfussy skin products which you use very regularly. I'm not convinced expensive = better. I use Aveeno as my moisturiser and my skin feels soft and dewy.
Sunscreen.

I use Sukin products, which have no nasties in, they're brilliant! Midrange in terms of price but last a long time.
I also take Her9. supplements everyday, they're made with the natural version of the vitamins and nutrients rather than the synthetic version, which means higher absorbancy by your body.
I also went tea total about 3 years ago, and it makes a world of difference for your skin!
