Conservative workplace, what to wear?

If you work in a conservative workplace where men still wear suits day to day, what do you actually wear at work? I'm thinking jobs like the parliament, senior banking, more formal law firms etc.

I currently do a 'professional services' job but for a 'fun' company, and have always worked in the kinds of environments where creative or casual dressing is often expected, e.g fashion, entertainment. I'm usually the most formally dressed person in any room! However I'm a fashion lover so often push the boundaries, e.g. I may go to work in a baby blue skirt suit, or a crazy shape Alaia skirt, because it's fun and I can. I certainly look like Cher from Clueless sometimes, and love that I have the freedom to wear catwalk-y looks.

Moving to a senior leadership in a conservative finance firm and looking to build a new wardrobe. I do generally know how senior people dress :) However, I want to put my own spin on it as much as I can and still buy items I love and look nice in.

As general rules, I am thinking:

  • Neutral colours, like navy, grey, maybe beige for summer
  • No visible branding, not even on buttons (e.g. no Dior/Chanel buttons)
  • No patterns
  • Black and white still heavily preferred
  • Creative earrings or shoes might be ok occasionally
  • Brands like Max Mara, Loro Piana etc may be a good fit

Another challenge I have is hair. I have very long bouncy shampoo commercial hair, and I feel this may be seen as unserious. Should I put it up?

Makeup will probably be fine as I hardly wear any. Have a very dollish face which again probably won't work in my favour but can't exactly restyle it, can I? I'm not a glasses wearer if that's relevant.

Essentially... The challenge is restyle this woman to be taken seriously in a conservative workplace! Anyone up for a makeover?

From what I see - neutrals yes, some bright colours but not crazy and hardly any pastels, but doesn’t need to be all black. Some patterns, potentially stripes? The v senior women wear dresses and heels (flats seem to have gone out the window again). Maybe not flashy Versace but I do see discreet / small logos. Creative shoes more popular than creative earrings/ jewellery. I’m Big 4 rather than finance but a decent proxy I would think.

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply! Yes, the workplace I am going to is very Big 4 adjacent, so good tips! That's more or less the idea I had in mind.

When you say dresses and heels, are you saying trousers aren't that popular anymore?

I do love a sharp 'tuxedo' kind of look, but I am prone to wanting it to have some edge. What would you think if someone turned up wearing this: https://no.maxmara.com/p-1041536306003-mxsfionda-camel

I think it looks great and sharp, but doubts about the colour and waist detail in terms of being appropriate.

Equally I love this (with sleeves underneath) but feel it could be seen as too 'fashion' https://www.dior.com/en_gb/fashion/products/421R91A1761_X9000_T42?utm_source=google&utm_source_platform=GoogleAds&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CDC_FLG_GBR_AO_UNI_OTH_OGOING_EC_PMAX_GGL_CRD_ENG_EUR_MXMT_BRA_HIGH_PRICE_NEW&wiz_campaign=21777911881&wiz_source=google&wiz_medium=search_cpc&wiz_term=&wiz_content=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21777912679&gbraid=0AAAAAD2zZbFcGHnn4OQoiqV_mG98Nmgkh&gclid=Cj0KCQiAk6rNBhCxARIsAN5mQLtkemXnGaanGInzK4WoEsyAQ80YOfE-GvsnNIySGV82cfp_L-rueWQaAlRWEALw_wcB

I'm just getting the feeling that plain cuts are favoured over anything that attracts attention, even with a distinct shape or cut such as a big skirt.
