Handkerchief?

Wipeywipey · 06/03/2026 11:23

I thought I would post for recommendations after a slightly odd urge to buy handkerchiefs!

In my defence I am watching a lot of Kdramas and every relationship appears to begin with a stranger being offered a handkerchief for all sorts of daily issues; fell over? Have a hanky. Crying? Here, I won't say much but this shows I care. Spillages, sniffles, coughs, sweat... I have been left wondering how I have lived to my 40's without one to be honest. The idea of having a soft folded multiple use and relatively cheap item to save the day on my person is calling to me.

Does anyone else buy these and if so can you point a "newbie" in the direction of some good quality machine washable and preferably nicely patterned handkerchiefs, which fit nicely in a pocket or small bag?

Amazon have plenty, but for really nice ones, try Liberty.

youalright · 06/03/2026 12:28

Omg I've always called it a hankerchief without the D 😳

Same.

I used to have loads as a little girl, really pretty ones. I wonder what happened to them. I think I might need some handkerchiefs now.

Wipeywipey · 06/03/2026 12:46

Thank you @LoserWinner - I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on Amazon as some of them are ginormous and on closer inspection say hand wash only. Some look like muslin squares which are a bit too reminiscent of poonami and milk vomits hiding on my shoulder.

I have loads of plain white gents hankies. Ladies, more feminine ones are too small for a good blow.

However I do have some pretty embroidered ladies hanks for church on Sundays. They’re just a tad more “classy.”

CreepyCoupe · 06/03/2026 13:18

‘Multiple use’? Ew. Would you blow your nose and then put it back in your pocket? That’s rank.

PleasantPedant · 06/03/2026 13:19

@youalright , It's hand+kerchief.
The kerchief would be a scarf - it's from headcover.

Liberty has pretty ones.

PleasantPedant · 06/03/2026 13:21

@CreepyCoupe , It's practical.

Yes that’s what I do. I do a lot of fell walking and paper tissues just disintegrate.
Do you use paper tissues once the throw them away.

muddyford · 06/03/2026 13:34

I use M&S men's ones.

Peacexbliss · 06/03/2026 13:35

Op recommend me a KD please.

That is a good call! If I get on with them I will have to get more.

I have bought a Liberty one to see how I get on with it for now. Seems silly to trial using a handkerchief but it will be a new habit to remember to wash it and put it into a bag or coat rather than the packs of hand tissues that usually end up in the washing machine.

I have the fine white cotton ones. They aren't too bulky and wash and iron well.

Yes, if I ever had to blow my nose, I’d do it into a tissue and then dispose of it. The idea of putting something with snot in it back in a pocket is disgusting to me.

Any particular genre? I liked The Glory for drama but there are a lot of nice ones for food, romance, history (Bon Appetit has all three, Reply 1988 also good), comedy (Behind your touch - bonkers) and geographical references to North Korea with Crash Landing on You.

They're usually about £1 for a new (but dated) box of 3 in charity shops.
Irish linen men's ones are brilliant.

They don't end up as lint all over your washing if you accidentally leave one in a pocket.

hexsnidgett · 06/03/2026 13:46

I have some men's ones from m&s or Asda I keep a clean one in my coat. For trousers pockets, I have ladies ones which are harder to come by. Proper market stalls are a good place to look as well as cheap shops like Yorkshire trading.
I bought a batch of these from Amazon and they are great.https://amzn.eu/d/0h7NtqbN

Real hankies are so nice to use, don't dry your nose so much when you have a cold and never disintegrate in the wash.

They are at least as hygienic as knickers Smile

I remember when John Lewis used to have beautiful displays of them.

Thank you im off to watch all of them lol.

DeniseInterceptors · 06/03/2026 13:56

If you’re not sure you’d get on with them you could try a few cotton scarves from the charity shop (they always seem to have millions) cut into four squares. Then you get nice colours and patterns rather than plan white.

Wipeywipey · 06/03/2026 14:00

@Peacexbliss The Glory is quite dark so don't go there if you have a sensitive disposition (I just reread your name) - the rest are chill. Netflix has all of them.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. My lovely Liberty 'kerchief is being dispatched and I am quite excited! Definitely feels as though this will be an elevated olfactory experience.

I got some lovely ones in M&S a few years and when I ask again for them again they said they only sold women’s handkerchiefs at Christmas.😀 Yet men’s are sold all year round.

Good call on the charity shop- so often there's a few unused packs of pretty ladies hankies

BlueBlueCowWondering · 06/03/2026 16:58

DH has a clean hankie every day. I'm v often the grateful recipient 😃

martha79 · 06/03/2026 17:00

I got some decent (men's but just light colours) ones from Boots at Christmas, not sure if they do them all year round.
