Is the "Day-to-Night" dress actually a total myth?

I’ve spent the last week looking for one decent, high-quality dress that I can wear for a corporate lunch followed immediately by a black tie dinner with friends.

Everything I find is either too 'stiff/corporate' for the evening, or way too 'party/exposed' for the office. I feel like I'm constantly carrying a huge tote bag with a second outfit. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

Does anyone actually manage to do a full day-to-night transition in one outfit without it being a total compromise? Or am I just delusional for thinking one piece of clothing should be able to handle two different vibes? Tell me your worst 'outfit logistics' fails and please tell me if you really struggle with this problem too?

I don’t think it’s possible to get an outfit that works for both office and a black tie event - the two are completely different.

I don’t have an issue with going from office to smart social in one outfit (usually just putting a jacket or blazer over a more dressy top and wearing trousers that work for both), but wouldn’t even try for black tie.

OneSassyBlueReader · 05/03/2026 15:12

I agree, Black Tie feels so different to business wear! But even with the 'office to smart social' thing, do you find the blazer/jacket workaround works?
In an ideal world, if you could physically change the structure of your work outfit for the evening—like making a high neckline lower or losing the sleeves entirely—without having to layer more clothes on top, do you think that would actually solve the 'vibe' shift, or is it always going to be the fabric that gives it away? I've seen some modular clothing tops where you can remove the sleeves etc but never in a dress.

I'd just get a little black dress, wear a jacket or cardi or even a jumper with it in the daytime, take that off and just put different jewellery and shoes in the evening. Maybe different tights depending on the weather.

petitpasta · 05/03/2026 15:19

Before I lost weight I had a phase eight jumpsuit that could probably have done both. I'd have worn it with flats and a cropped jacket in the day and added heels and statement jewellery and removed the jacket for the evening. It's a rare thing to be able to do both of those things though

Doggymummar · 05/03/2026 15:24

I ave a few jumpsuits I would say can do casual to smart or vice versa but not work to black tie. I'm wearing a navy phase 8 jumpsuit today with flip flops and will be wearing it to a works fundraiser tomorrow with heels and a white tuxedo jacket

I think those dresses are usually aimed at eg desk to dinner with friends, not black tie. Best bet maybe a shift dress or something like this https://www.lkbennett.com/product/DRALEXVISCOSEMIXBlueNavy~-Navy

Day to night yes but full black tie is harder. A black fitted dress is my go to, but it isn’t really wow for black tie. Depends on “how much” black tie vibes you need

Dogmum74 · 05/03/2026 15:41

There is no such thing as a dress you can wear to the office and then wear to a black tie event. What a silly question.

StrawberryPi · 05/03/2026 15:52

"Day-to-Night" - yes, I do it all the time, usually a midi dress that is both smart enough for work but fun enough for play such as this or this.

"Day-to-Black-Tie" is a nope from me, those dress codes are just too completely different.

Business wear and black tie aren’t compatible. But that’s not what people usually mean when they talk about looks that go from day to night! Usually it’s a relaxed office dress code and a relaxed night out at a bar or mid range restaurant.

So jeans/trousers and a fancy top, or a knee length dress with a jacket to dress it up (if it’s casual) or down (if it’s business-y).

Wiresring · 05/03/2026 16:35

I think day to night means office and dinner date, not black tie.

Leather boots and a jumper/cardigan over the top for the day.

Kitten heels, necklace and earrings for black tie.

They used to do a lovely jewel green colour, which I've made work for day/night before.

I wouldn't have worn this to the office pre-Covid but I've sold all my fabulous workwear dresses since then. If the day look is too casual, I'd go for a black jumpsuit. Slip a crisp shirt underneath during the day, take it off for black tie.

I'd just get a little black dress, wear a jacket or cardi or even a jumper with it in the daytime, take that off and just put different jewellery and shoes in the evening. Maybe different tights depending on the weather.

This. I have 2 black dresses from Boden like this. Boots and a cardi or jacket for work and heels and jewellery for evening. Maybe a shawl.

This is what I always did. I worked on the basis that more jewellery, lipstick and bigger hair would do the trick.

However, the satin slip idea from @SalmonRunner's better! It looks more 'evening do' than my LBDs did. I wouldn't have worn satin to the office back then, but you definitely can now. Stick a jumper over the top or wear a jacket, depending on your workplace culture.

Day to night is work to dinner, not lunch to black tie event. That outfit doesn't exist and people have very little need for it. You'll need a change of clothes.

OneKeenLemur · 05/03/2026 22:06

I think it could be done but you'd need to still probably carry a bag... If you did a full skirt, like this, with a satin black cami, and then a more smart-casual sweater or cardigan over it. Change jewellery, maybe shoes, lose the jumper and hair into a chignon and lipstick... You're pretty close!
Black tie should be floor length but you'd probably get away with it?

My go-to for black-tie is generally a beaded evening dress. Anything less, and I feel underdressed. I simply can't see how you could wear anything that was black-tie tier to work.

I've never understood what the difference is between a "little black dress" and a black dress. Would someone please put me out of my misery?

A little black dress is literally a very smart little black dress. Won't be longer than knee length or just below. Probably sleeveless or possibly bracelet length sleeve. Not tight fitting but definitely not voluminous. Shift, slight A line or slight flare. For day wear would have been wool crepe or very fine wool. Going out version velvet or silk.

The day version used to be found in every legal office pre - Covid. Can now be found on front of house staff at up market hotels, up market auction houses, up market jewellers. Audrey Hepburn was the classic LBD wearer

Black tie is referring to the men's dress code. Black dinner suit with satin lapels, dress shirt with pleating, maybe shirt studs, double cuffs and cuff links, black bow tie and black patent shoes.

Female black tie dress code varies a lot these days but basically more glitzy than a day dress but definitely not a ball gown. You could wear a black evening dress but a black LBD probably not glam enough.

The little black dress (LBD) is a black evening or cocktail dress, cut simply and often short. (Wikipedia)

The point is its office-to-evening adaptability. A jumper dress in black is a black dress, but it isn't an LBD.

Agreed re jumper dress but a black crepe wool dress can be an LBD. A black cotton dress can't.

ThatCyanCat · 06/03/2026 06:31

Day to night, yes. Corporate lunch to black tie, you'll need a fairy godmother.

TheSandgroper · 06/03/2026 07:05

The only thing I could think of is buy some silk in a good navy or forest green and have a dressmaker make you a Dior New Look dress. Wear with court shoes with a fine heel.

Change jacket, change jewellery and a brighter lippy for the evening. That might get you through.

AnchorWHAT · 06/03/2026 07:28

I agree with the smart black dress, jumper over for day with boots, sparkly wrap and jewellery with heels for evening with more dramatic make up and maybe change your hairstyle, add a sparkly clip or something or an updo. Have fun.
