Hair: what do I need for dry ends?

Im sure you can help! I have very thick and wavy hair that always gets compliments. For a while, I assume it is hormones, the top layer and especially the tips of it are quite dry and frizzy.

I would like some tips what to put in my wet hair after washing and before I let it dry. I don't blow dry it. Something that's not going to look greasy or stain bedding.

If it's hormones then all I can say is, if you can, throw money at it. My hair used to be so easy. I could use cheap products and it was great. When I hit peri it turned to straw. If a loose hair went down my top it felt like a twig was loose in there. I just decided to try every recommendation, and didn't bother with the guilt of not finishing a product if it wasn't helping. What I've ended up with won't be the solution for everyone, but after a year or two of trying stuff I've finally found my hair again. For me, it's Aveda botanical shampoo and the mask conditioner with a laurel hair oil, but that was after trying all sorts across all price points. And I stopped brushing. I use a comb in the shower, then just "finger comb" for the next 4 days.

Thank you.yeah i don't brush. Its definitely perimenopause. I use Aveeno shampoo. The oat one and nothing else. Not sure i will bother with a mask. Hm.

I asked a friend what she used at the weekend and she said a little argan oil on the ends. Haven’t tried it yet but I’m going to.

Herbal Essences chamomile leave-in conditioner spray. Quick and easy, smells great.

Yourangduckie · 05/03/2026 22:32

I use this it's amazing for dry hair ends. Plus it smells lovely.

Hi OP. Look for lightweight leave-in conditioners with ingredients like panthenol, hydrolyzed proteins (wheat, silk, or keratin), and glycerin that actually hydrate and strengthen the hair shaft rather than just coating it. For the oil component, lighter oils like argan oil, squalane, or caprylic/capric triglyceride absorb well and won't leave greasy marks, whereas heavier oils like coconut or castor will stain your bedding and make your hair look oily. Apply these to soaking wet hair, focusing only on mid-lengths to ends and avoiding your roots. Hope this helps.

I use a Moroccan/Argan hair oil. Really helps. Also use heat protectors if using heat.

I use kerastase night treatment, smells gorgeous but pricey - it is effetive though if applied generously (5-6 pump for long-ish hair (just below shoulders)
i also use Ouai leave in conditioner (amazon) and it is cheaper and still effective but you dont have that luxurious feeling.

Perimenoanti · 06/03/2026 11:20

Great, thank you. Do you use it before blow drying? I don't blow dry so I wonder if it does anything if i just spray it one and leave my hear to dry.

Similar situation here! A question for those of you that avoid brushing your hair: How do manage tangles and general messiness without resorting to brushing? Any tips for keeping things looking tidy??

BoredZelda · 06/03/2026 11:25

I spent a whole load of money trying to sort dry ends. The only solution was to have a trim.

This does not happen to me, fortunately.

Disclaimer: I do not have thick wavy hair so maybe someone with the same hair type can help, but here's what ive used.

Hair mask once a week with a deep conditioner does make a difference if you want to try it.
Garner Hair Food (I like the Papya one but people really rate the banana, I think there is a curl specific one!) I put a good dollop in to the mid lengths to ends, claw clip it up, then either sit in the bath or go do something else for 15 minutes then wash out.
I honestly rate the Tresemme conditioners as well, what I will say is its definitely helped my hair to make sure I do leave a conditioner on for 3+ minutes before washing out.

On wet hair before drying:
I can recommend...
Swarzkopf Professional leave in conditioner.
Ouai leave in conditioner (love this)
Kerastase Genesis Defense Thermique spray. (Expensive but excellent)
Milk Shake Leave in spray

Then once my hair is dry I rub a blob of hair oil into my hands and run it through my hair mid lengths to ends. I use the L'Oréal Miracle Elixir which is very good and its a nice pump bottle. Again, not sure on how hair oils work on curly hair so might be worth a bit of research.
You can often find minis of more expensive products online or on Vinted to try them out first too!

Leave in conditioner when wet, work through your hair with fingers and untangle gently that way (i often find they take 30 seconds to 'warm up' and start untangling) then wide tooth comb the rest.
Then keeping on top of it when dry, i do a blob of hair oil every day on the mids and ends of dry hair, work it through with fingers first then wide tooth comb again!

Nicecatneighbour · 06/03/2026 12:04

I use a leave in conditioner to blow dry, Tresseme keratin is good. Then a serum on the ends, Argan oil, or Aussie serum, which smells nice.

Vicliz24 · 06/03/2026 12:04

I use a dab of avocado oil across the ends at bedtime then tie it up to sleep .

I use it when I blow dry or when I just leave my hair to dry naturally. You can get a 50ml size on look fantastic.com to try it out.

Morepositivemum · 06/03/2026 13:09

Another for oil, just put a tiny bit through, doesn’t even need to be expensive, the pennys argan oil did the job although apparently macadamia oil is the holy grail!!

FannyBawz · 09/03/2026 09:58

I have hair like yours and it’s waist length. I use Ogx oil on the ends and I also twirl it into two loose coils and let it air dry. Keeps it smooth but still wavy
