I'm hoping you gurus can help me to find something to wear for an event I have to attend

My lovely brother has been given an award and to celebrate there is a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament with a drinks reception after- all taking place in the day time on 30th March.

I haven't bought anything to wear for about a decade- body has been wrecked with having 3 kids- and I have no idea where to start.

I'm 46, 5'6 and weigh 150lbs- apple shaped (no waist, big tummy, slim legs, previously had a decent figure but it's definteiy tipped into matronly now). I look awful in maxi dresses.

I don't want to show him up. Generous budget as whatever I buy I will wear again

Please help!

I went earlier in the week to an event, I go to an event there every 6 months or so. Don’t go too weddingy and it’s COLD in westminster hall, also lots of standing around if you are going to a reception so wear comfortable shoes. Some of the committee rooms can be pretty warm though so layers are great!
The event I went to, probably 70% of the ladies were wearing trousers with a tailored jacket.
I wore a dress and cardigan from Hobbs that I already have. Have a look at photos of past events and see what people are wearing, I’d stay away from very pale or bright colours as there are often photographers and you stick out like a sore thumb if everyone else is in muted/dark colours (I once wore a bright red top 🥴).

If you’re a size 12 it is very unlikely you are a 36 bra band. I’m an 18 and wear a 36. Get fitted by a proper bra fitter( not M and S) and that will make a huge difference to how you look and feel.
