Uniqlo jeans - jeans advice in general for menopausal despair

I have put it off for as long as I can but I now have to do that task that sits only second after buying swimwear in terms of dread factor. The purchasing of jeans.
Ive been a size 14 for years, tall at 5’9. It seems now my menopausal expansion has caught up with me and I’m now borderline 16 in most jeans, and joy of joys, lots of the weight sits on my waist.
Before I go through the soul destroying task of trying on eleven hundred pairs of jeans, I wondered if someone could help please. I’m looking for baggy jeans in a soft fabric that isn’t that super heavy weighty denim. I’ve looked at these from Uniqlo but why for the love of god can they not photograph these on someone not waif thin for a change??
Anyone got these who has a similar frame? Or any other alternatives you could recommend.
I’d be very grateful.

I know you are looking for soft baggy jeans. But honestly Levi's rib cage jeans in wide leg or straight are incredible for mid life tummy. Sit at the right place.
I am a 12 and 5"8. Best to try them on. And yes expensive, but they have sales. I

Have a look at the jeans on Snag. They come in so many sizes with a measuring guide. Pictures of both curvy and slim ladies too! They are very soft and comfy

I think your best bet is to just order them in a couple of sizes OP - or go to a store, if you can. Jeans fit so differently on everyone. I find Uniqlo fits small, if that helps?

I needed new jeans recently and after sending back probably 20 pairs over a few weeks, I ended up taking a day off work and going to an actual shopping centre. Tried on every pair of jeans in my size I didn't hate on sight, and came away with one pair (and a pair of wide leg linen trousers) that I actually really like and feel comfortable in. I probably wouldn't have ordered either online. I look wildly different in them to the model (because I'm a size 18/20 44 year old, not a size 8 20 year old).

Uniqlo have a lot of different cuts of jeans.
i usually go to their shop and try a load on to work out what works for me.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/03/2026 10:17

I looked at those jeans recently and the size guide thing put me at needing a 34 waist based on my height/weight - I’m a 12 and all my jeans are a 29 waist - so definitely order multiple sizes!

CharlotteRumpling · 04/03/2026 10:18

I love Uniqlo but their sizes are tricky.

Wellnowlookhere · 04/03/2026 10:26

Thanks everyone! I’m a long way from a store so will order multiple sizes - it told me size 34 but I suspect that is because there are no bigger sizes!
Thanks for suggestions of other brands too - the older I get the harder it is to know where to look for clothes that fit me really well I find 😩

Uniqlo provides flat measurements of every model of clothing they sell. Just measure yourself with a tape and go from there, it’s very easy to get the size right at Uniqlo provided you know your body dimensions.

For jeans use “relaxed waist” in their tables as a reference point, it should be your waist measured close to the body but not tight.

NotMyNose · 04/03/2026 10:27

Hey OP I have those exact Uniqlo jeans! I'm also a size 14 (by which I mean 12 to 16 because sizing is so inconsistent) and almost as tall as you. I am hourglass and can only wear things that sit on my actual waist, which is high.

They're lovely and soft and probably long enough for you. ... They are unbelievably vanity sized however! My waist measurement is 33 inches but I have these jeans is size 30 waist and they're not at all tight. I can pull the waist out in fact!

The style is actually flattering on my middle, although they're stretch denim which is never going to be as tummy flattening as thick non stretch denim. I find Snag's high waist pants are really good for smoothing under trousers without actually being control pants.

That's interesting I'll see what it says about my trousers later! I've followed their (trousers) sizing advice in the past and they have always given me clothes too big. It's possibly an aesthetic thing. If I were petite I might want a very oversized look but as a tall curvy person I don't.

BuddhaAtSea · 04/03/2026 10:32

I’m a size 16 most days, and all my Uniqlo trousers are XL. I’d go for a 34 if I were you.
you can always return them, but I live in their trousers.
I can vouch for their navy barrel cotton trousers in XL, I promise you’ll love them.

ohbygolly · 04/03/2026 10:33

Levis do cinch baggy lightweight jeans. They're high rise, the fabric is nice and soft, and saw them on a lady yesterday, and they were very flattering - had a nice fall to them.

Gettingbysomehow · 04/03/2026 10:36

I live in elasticated waists these days if I can get them. Even though Ive lost all the menopausal weight. I just wear tops that cover the waist. I just cant stand the discomfort of "hard" clothing any more.
And nobody can tell anyway.

SM33 · 04/03/2026 10:38

Menopause means buying jeans is the most awful task! My stomach is a different dress size by the end of the day so a stretchy comfortable waist is a must. I’ve just started buying from Beyond nine - all their trousers seem to have an elasticated waist- extremely comfortable! Not cheap but worth every penny! My favourites are the Remi. They do seem to have sales and promotions regularly.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/03/2026 10:57

Have a look at Muthahood Goods. Awful name, not bad clothes.

This is their table for “Baggy Curve Jeans”. I have them and I looked my waist size up in this table and it’s spot on. The “waist (relaxed)” is the one that reflects the actual waist width of these trousers.

I love the Uniqlo curve jeans, they are so comfortable and because they come in waist measurements, there are lots of sizes.

I think they come up big, I’m a 10ish and have got a 26 waist which is a bit big but I kind of like that, for comfort.

Uniqlo sizing is tricky, I tried loads on last time I went to London which was really helpful. Ordering lots of sizes is the next best option.

Yep you're right! My "30 inch" jeans are 87.5cm which is 34.5 inches.

Why on earth don't they just call them 34 inch jeans?!!

i think they are trying to account both for vanity sizing and for vanity measuring 😊, you need to measure yourself like a tailor does, so not tight and assuming the worst case scenario (giant pizza 🍕). When I buy online I actively look for brands that provide exact measurements of all their products, but even in this thread you can see that it’s not that obvious for other people.

I have found making friends with my tape measure absolutely transformative. And from there working out my body shape.

It almost feels like a radical act because to an extent I am immune to how a product is marketed. I adore clothing and style, but my measurements and my shape have to come first.
Size on the label is almost irrelevant.
