A deodorant question

MimiGC · 28/02/2026 14:10

My daughter is 19 and has always sweated a lot. She is embarrassed that despite clean clothes everyday and always using deo, she still has a strong body odour at the end of the day. She has been using Triple Dry 72 hour antiperspirant deodorant, which seems less effective as time goes by.
Any recommendations gratefully received.

I'm currently using Sanex Active Fresh, it's very good. Im not keen on the other Sanex fragrances, I find them ineffective. My daughter uses Mitchum, it works for her yet not for me. Everyone's skin is different, it's very much trial and error to see what works and what doesn't.

Does she wash with bar soap or body wash. I know its not what you asked but bar soap is definately better in terms of keeping the BO smell at bay.

traveltraveltravel78 · 28/02/2026 14:26

Driclor on Amazon is good

Tortephant · 28/02/2026 14:32

Green people roll on.

curious79 · 28/02/2026 14:35

I would look at her diet - that has a huge implication for BO
basically the cleaner the diet - low/no dairy, red meat - and high fresh veg & fruit, the less smelly she’ll be (at least that has been my experience!!)

AshHeart · 28/02/2026 14:38

Someone on here recommended Perspirex, which you use once a week and can shower in-between without having to reapply. I'd tried all the usual recommendations by then and wasn't hopeful but this really does work.

76evie · 28/02/2026 14:39

Wash with an antibacterial soap, my daughter uses one by Palmolive but dettol do one too. Also the doctor can prescribe a deodorant that does help but can be drying on your pits making them sore so it’s a balancing act. Can be used on other parts as my daughter gets sweaty hands and was given it to use on them too, again really drys the skin out though.

There is also tablets the doctor can have you for excessive sweating but we have no experience of them.

I wash my daughter’s clothes with Ariel biological washing powder and use dettol laundry sanitiser instead of softener. I also spray the armpits with white vinegar before popping in the washer.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 28/02/2026 14:39

I used to be like this and struggled with sweating through clothes.
wash with bar soap, I use detol
I use a stick deodorant (sure)
and also a spray deodorant over the top
its really helped stop the sweating and and smells.
edited to add.
if she tried the one you put on at night and wash off the next day like perspirex make sure the skin is bone dry before applying and let it dry in fully before wearing jammies. I use a hair drier before and after application

She uses body wash, so I’ll suggest swapping to bar soap.

I dab a bit of glycolic acid on my pits once a week and it’s done me wonders, I also use wild deodorant and I don’t smell of BO at all. And this is coming from someone who’s BO was extreme, no matter how much I washed.

Wildviolet · 28/02/2026 15:33

If nothing else works I believe that botox injections can control this?

A friend of mine had the Botox injections and they really made a difference - her problem was more excess sweat and less so the smell.

I also have a friend of a friend who suffers really badly with sweating and BO, even with showering multiple times a day etc. The best antiperspirant she found for her was the Sure Women Maximum Protection Clean Scent Antiperspirant Deodorant Cream Stick. The recommendation is to apply it at night before you sleep as that maximises effectiveness apparently.

NeedSleepNow · 28/02/2026 15:45

I've suffered a lot with excess sweating. Years ago when I had private health insurance I had botox injections in my arm pits and it made a huge difference, I can't remember how long it lasts for, I think you have to have it redone every 3 months or so. I can't justify the cost now though.

Using proper soap to wash rather than shower gel makes a big difference for me and wearing natural fibre clothes. I sweat and smell horribly if I wear polyester so I never buy anything made from it now and stick to cotton when I can.

Deoderant wise I use a mitchum spray at the moment. I used to use a sure max cream but it hasn't worked very well for me recently. I was prescribed a Deoderant from the gp a few years back but it hurt so much to use (it felt like my arm pits were on fire) so I couldn't stick with it and went back to traditional deodorants.

Freya1542 · 28/02/2026 15:50

it may be worth her trying a clinical strength anti perspirant @MimiGC

Such as Perspi-Guard

Blarn · 28/02/2026 16:03

Bar soap and a flannel. Also two pit washes as deodorant really sticks, so washing to remove it then another lot of soap to clean the skin.

I've always been very smelly before my period and the last year noticed that the smell was there all the time. Tried a natural deodorant on a whim and now I don't smell! Well, Ido smell a bit of BO at the end of the day but I just reapply the deodorant. But it is so much better smelling slightly sweaty sometimes than the awful honk I had before and my the smell doesn't stick to my clothes anymore so I dont have to keep throwing away tshirts. It's like my sweat was reacting with antiperspirant to create an unholy stench.

I suspect it is hormonal as I suffered the same in my 20s with a pill I was taking. Stopped the pill and the smell stopped too. Just another thing to add to the list of stuff that's gone wrong since I turned 40!

Driclor stops you sweating - apply every month or so. Them Mitchum day to day works for me

I did it for a few days in a row (maybe3/4), but then dropped down to every time the excessive sweating came back which for me was about once a month. I think you’re supposed to do it weekly ish.
It’s quite uncomfortable to apply - like hot pins and needles so did not want to do more than I needed!!! Effective though.

It really does work . I sweat a lot. I find it really irritating though and have had times when I couldn’t stand it any longer after applying it and had to rush to go wash it off

NannyR · 28/02/2026 17:09

I swear by using a salt crystal deodorant stick, you just rub it on your wet armpits straight after a shower and it leaves a thin layer of salt on your skin. This stops bacterial growth and it's the bacteria reacting with sweat that causes BO.
It isn't an antiperspirant so it doesn't stop you sweating, but it might be worth trying, maybe alongside an antiperspirant.

Besafeeatcake · 28/02/2026 17:18

Everyone of my North American friends (including me as an expat to the UK) all agree that deodorants here are crap and do nothing. There are many threads on it and loss of people make sure they buy in bulk when they go back.

I would personally buy from Amazon American antiperspirant and deodorant brands. I use Secret and love it. My Mom uses Mitchum and swears by it.

BreatheAndFocus · 28/02/2026 17:19

Ex sweated a lot and had an anti-perspirant prescribed by the GP. It was a medical thing not a cosmetic. I can’t remember the details of how often he used it, but I do remember that it was very effective very quickly.

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 28/02/2026 17:28

Definitely use bar soap in the shower before antiperspirant.

Also, This will sound weird- bear with me. The type of bacteria in her armpits could be making the smell worse. Does she have a partner of family member who sweats/smells much less and could wipe their armpits on a flannel that she could then wipe on hers to try to recolonise her armpits with different bacteria strains? I've been reading around this and apparently couples who share flannels and roll on deodorants change their smell

I bought AKT London for my husband at Christmas - it’s unisex. He didn’t/doesn’t have an issue with BO but did sweat a lot and this was staining his shirts badly. He uses a tiny amount and it’s brilliant. It was developed by dancers.
