Hand cream for 80yr old dad

Years ago my dad used to use Smiths Cremolia once in a while when his hands got rough, I loved the smell. He’s on blood thinners and his hands are always so bruised I wondered if there was a hand cream that might help protect his hands a bit more. He’s still very active, if he’s not on the roof replacing a tile (he will be the death of me never mind him!) he’s chopping logs, doing the garden etc so he does get bashed about a bit.

Something that’s not too greasy and little scent. Thank you

O’Keefes is great, one of the best I’ve tried for cracked/dry skin and it isn’t scented.

I second O'Keefes working hands. It acts as a barrier cream as well , really good .

Excellent thank you!

My Dad used to use cremola too! I'd completely forgotten that smell til now, thankyou for the reminder @WildFlowerBees

Sounds like my Dad who is mid 90s. We had to stop him wanting to chop down a tree branch last year! Still buying drill bits etc for his workshop, I do regular trips to Screwfix with him!

Had a lovely scent didn’t it, I used to smell the open pot when my dad used it.

I love that’s he’s still so independent but not so much when I phone him and he says he had to go on the roof, he wants to paint the kitchen in a few weeks and refuses to let me help him and gets a bit grumpy with me. So I’ll be going to his under the guise of looking for something in the loft. They are a worry sometimes!

On the plus side he has every tool a person could ever need in his workshop so I never get caught out if I don’t have something!

If you wanted something less mass produced I can heartily recommend Cornish Skin Food products. Beautiful quality. They do an orange and rosemary hand salve which works really well. Also a calm balm - i think that's lavender and calendula. Fab stuff.

I brought my dad Aveeno hand cream when he had chemo and was on steroids - he also has really thin skin and seemed to cut and bruise his hands if he so much thought of touching anything 😂

Plinketyplonks · 28/02/2026 07:06

I bought my old dad Aveeno too when his hands kept cracking through thin skin.

Morepositivemum · 28/02/2026 07:08

Another for aveeno more due to the bruising etc as I think it has oats in it which are soothing

Neil’s yard hand cream is absolutely divine I can’t say if it’s very protective but it’s thick and the scent is really glorious.

I've found CeraVe good. Atrixo in the green tub is one I've used for decades, best thing ever!

I was using O'Keefs recently but it wasn't working so switched to CeraVe at night.

I get really dry hands (the skin on my fingers splits when it's really bad).

Cocktailsandcheese · 28/02/2026 08:42

Nursem (unscented) is the best one I've found

Thirding Aveeno - the blue one, not the green one.

Also Superdrug intensive moisture hand cream (green tube) is also v good and only £2.50.
