Help - weight loss and previous clothes.

I have two Sen kids and am a lone parent and for the past X number of years I have been wearing leggings and dresses. I have lost 20kgs. I still have a couple of stone to go until I get to the desired weight.

Part of me is saying I need to get rid of all those stretchy leggings and baggy tops and leggings over dresses.

Part of me wants to throw nothing out.

I have assembled myself a basic capsule wardrobe of navyish items.

what should I do with the drawers full of clothes? Is it better to just donate en masse to charity or recycle or keep? Or should I vacuum pack and keep?

Some of it could go but I have been ill recently and am having trouble being ruthless.

I know people say when you lose weight to get rid of the old clothes so you have motivation not to get back to the same size, but that never worked for me and I just found myself regretting the clothes I gave away because I had to go out and buy new.

I'd keep some of the better/less worn items and vacuum pack them, then donate or sell the rest of they're in good condition.

I've also lost some weight and have been really enjoying clearing out my wardrobe and getting rid, but I have kept some of the nicer bits as a "just in case"

Could you not alter some of your favourite ones so that they fit you now? Depends on the style really.

FedAndWatered · 24/02/2026 16:19

I am hopeless with a needle and I don’t know how much they will charge to alter them.

I am hopeless with a needle and I don’t know how much they will charge to alter them.

Where I go, basic things like taking in a waistband, are £10. Bigger jobs like taking in a dress through its full length are £20.

Here's what I'd do:

Things you love that can be altered - take to a tailor.

Anything else you should get at least £5 for - Vinted

All the rest - charity shop

TFImBackIn · 24/02/2026 16:42

I've been in the same situation - the best ones went to Vinted and the rest to the charity shop.

I wonder why you're sticking to navy now? You don't have to hide!

Britpopbaby · 24/02/2026 19:08

Give them away or sell them. It’s a way of saying goodbye to the old you.

MakemineaGandT · 24/02/2026 19:12

Sell them on Vinted and use the proceeds to add to your new wardrobe!

socks1107 · 24/02/2026 19:14

I’ve vinted everything in the last year and re bought a lot through vinted too

Doyouthinktheyknow · 24/02/2026 19:15

I have had some success with selling stuff on Vinted. It’s a bit of a faff but it all adds up and it is good to get rid of the old stuff. For me it feels like committing to the new me iyswim. Anything that hasn’t sold after a few weeks has gone to charity. I need to load some more stuff actually.

I’ve bought most of my new size clothing from Vinted too, it’s been great.

user593 · 24/02/2026 19:19

I’ve lost close to 4st so far and even though I have a way to go I’ve donated almost all my old clothes. I felt symbolically I just needed to get them out as I never want to wear them again!

SilenceInside · 24/02/2026 19:25

What I’ve done is decent stuff has been sold on Vinted. Stuff that’s too scruffy gets bagged up and my local council will come and collect textiles if you book it with them. My Vinted sale stash is vacuum packed whilst it’s waiting to be sold so it takes up less space.

For me, I can’t be doing with keeping bags and bags of clothes that don’t fit. I have done that in the past, and it just takes up space and they don’t ever get worn. Over the last 18 months, as I’ve been losing weight, I’ve gradually got rid of all of the bags of old clothes until now what is in my wardrobe is what I’ve got and it all fits me. I find it to be a big relief that it’s all gone.

If I ever gain significant weight so as to need bigger clothes again then I will buy new ones if necessary. I don’t plan on letting that happen.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/02/2026 19:30

I lost 5 stone and the charity shops didnt want my fat clothes even the expensive ones in great condition!!!
I sold the expendive ones on ebay and Im afraid the others went to the dump. I just could not even give them away.
Ive been ruthless. There is no way Im putting the weight back on.

Keroppi · 24/02/2026 19:38

Sell anything too big that's also a good brand/quality on eBay. Vinted people want something for nothing at the moment

Then maybe choose two outfits to keep for comfort and the rest LET IT GOOOO! Take to charity bins that are in supermarkets. Free yourself
Charity shops are too hard to donate to imo and it prolongs the anxiety around getting rid. Just be done with it

Follow some style guru type influencers and try and work out what you like and what you don't like now on your new body. What styles you'd like to try that's current
Wide leg jeans and flares are great on everyone really
M&S has some nice bits in, I've been in today and really was impressed with some of the upcoming spring summer stock.
Buy some work outfits if your personal style is still emerging

Uniqlo works for most bodies, very neutral and classic styles and the quality is nice without being hugely unaffordable. I yoyo in size and had pregnancies close together so my wardrobe was a mess for years, I just kept donating or selling on, buying from supermarkets and h&m etc fast fashion and trying to remain consistent weight when I could 😅
I have to say of course I objectively wasted money but I did and do enjoy shopping and buying things, especially when it was between pregnancies. A mood boost

FedAndWatered · 24/02/2026 20:06

I am actually shocked at the amount of clothes I have got over the last few years. I think maybe less is best, going forward.

It is so much nicer to have less clothes that fit you well that you like to wear. I’ve donated lots, those that aren’t so good have gone into the clothes bins at the dump and in a retail park.
