What to wear to an informal garden style get together

Hello lovely people in my phone
We have been. Invited to an informal 90th garden style get together in June.
What should I wear? I have absolutely no clue, all I know is its not formal attire.

Im a size 18, most of my weight on bum amd tummy area, so hiding that would be good and im 5ft 9, so no heels else I'll tower above everyone! I do feel self conscious in dresses and skirts, but willing to try a few on.
We live in Northern Scotland, rural area, so shops selling clothing are a trek to get to, so im relying on Internet shopping.

Hoping you lovely people can help me.
TIA.

It’s only February! Wait until nearer the time, when you’ve got an inkling of what the weather might be like - but a midi dress and flats of some sort would probably be fine.

I know i should wait, amd I will probably ask nearer the time, but my best friends, who's hosting keeps asking us all what we are thinking.of wearing!!

Has she told you what she’s planning to wear herself?

For something like this, my personal choice would probably be a broderie anglaise dress and either trainers or flat sandals- if the weather is nice.

If it’s an outdoor party in June in northern Scotland, I’d recommend waterproof trousers and a fleece!

zurigo · 23/02/2026 16:48

Northern Scotland in June ... how warm is that likely to be? I was in northern Scotland in May half-term a few years and it was pretty bloody cold, but then I'm a soft southerner! Personally, I'd be planning on things that can be layered or worn with tights, in case it's cold or wet or both. And garden party definitely = comfortable shoes. You don't want heels on grass anyway.

Just tell your friend you’re waiting to see what’s in the summer collections. That should shut her up.

It sounds like the sort of gathering where you could freely wear whatever you feel best in. (Within smart casual, weather dependent parameters.)

Something from here might be lovely (even if you need to take a raincoat with you):

I would wait until closer to the time for both choice in shops and also an idea of the weather.

My friend (size 20) loves Scarlett and Jo dresses. I was going to suggest wedges if its in a garden, but saw you don't want heels.

What DO you feel comfortable wearing? What clothes or styles suit you best? TBH, if its an informal garden thing, I'd likely wear jeans or linen trousers, nice blouse and nice shoes. I have massive boobs, so a V neck always suits me best and also a boot cut style trouser to balance things up.

MiddleAgedDread · 23/02/2026 17:06

layers and midge repellent!

YellowStockings · 23/02/2026 17:08

If you don't like dresses, why not wear some loose, wide legged trousers and a nice t-shirt or top? Then accessorise with flat sandals / trainers, earrings, a cool bag, sunglasses, etc.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/02/2026 18:08

I missed the Scotland bit!

Linen trousers are a good call, maybe with lacy/crochet type top and a jacket of some sort?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/02/2026 18:11

Ugh - sorry about the mad link

JustWhatIAlwaysWanted · 23/02/2026 18:13

A 90th? As in a 90th birthday celebration? Outdoors in northern Scotland?

Pineneedlesincarpet · 23/02/2026 18:19

Im in the freezing north (though not as far as you).

Id wear a linen or cotton maxi dress of some sort thats a lovely bright colour. Look at Boden as they've got some lovely new dresses (in the catalogue anyway that I received today in the post). V neck and waist line slightly raised. With trainers (or flat sandals if its warmer.) And bring a jacket. Thats my staple for all summer smartish events where the weather can turn horrendous or boiling and its not let me down yet.

Budget and general preferences?

She wasnt happy when I said waders and a waterproof!! From what I can gather she hasnt a wet weather plan as of yet, and most of the guests are 80+!

Budget is around £50-100 especially if can be worn again.
I know its early (friend is going to be wearing Me &Em, but that's just a bit too expensive.) Im looking as the early spring/summer stuff is coming out and it sort of got me thinking. We already have Smidge, so the wee beasties will be repelled, for us anyway!

Thanks all for your suggestions, even taking the Scottish weather into account, you've given me some ideas to think about until May (wont buy before then, but can start to get an idea and show ds, he loves fashion)

Cheaper alternative to the crochet top. Cotton! And they have some nice long sleeved crochet tops, too. Crochet top in their search brings them all up.
