Leather backpack for a handbag?

Just wondering and thought I’d enlist the numerous minds in S&B…please be absolutely honest and give me your opinion - I’m thinking of getting a leather backpack to use instead of a ‘classic’ handbag. But…does that have a bit of ‘90’s clubbing’ about it?? Will I look a bit odd? Or is it perfectly elegant and normal?
For full disclosure, I’m 53. (I know, I know…wear what you want, who cares…but I’d still like to ask!)

Yes, that did cross my mind. I think I’m going to get some kind of little padlock thing to seal the main compartment when I’m in busy areas…and I’ll only keep tissues (and maybe a mouse trap!) in the front pocket.

I tried using it along with a money belt for valuables for a bit, but it was too much of a faff. I still like it when my back's playing up though.

I use a backpack unless everything I need will fit comfortably into my pretty small crossbody bag. My backpack has a zipped top pocket with the zip opening facing the wearer's neck/back, which is reasonably secure, and a slip pocket on the inside, which is where I keep valuables if I'm in a high-risk area. Not leather though - I've just never liked the look of leather handbags or backpacks - just not me.

If I might need extra carrying capacity when I'm using my crossbody bag I shove one of my dwindling supply of supermarket plastic bags in the pocket. Annoying to have to carry very much like this for any distance, but sometimes worth it to avoid lugging a backpack around when I probably won't need the space.
