How many sizes too small would you say this ring is?

Me and DP recently traveled to Birmingham and had a custom engagement ring made and it arrived on Saturday but it’s too small!

It feels to me like it’s not just one size ‘wrong’ as I can only get it to just below my knuckle, but I have no idea what the difference between sizes is? We emailed immediately (they offer free resizing) and they said to keep trying it over the next few days but I’ve tried it on a few times and there is just no way it is going to magically fit!

We aren’t close to Birmingham so are going to have to post it back but I’m really stressed about how they will know how much to resize by? I Imagine they normally just go a size smaller / bigger but if I need more than one size bigger (which is how it feels) then what? Obviously we can ask these questions tomorrow once they are open but in the meantime thought I would garner some opinions of whether people just think this is one size out or not?

thanks

Looks like one size to me. I bought a wedding ring two sizes smaller as I was losing weight and it was notably tighter than that. Now I only have half a stone to go, it looks like that.

I don't know but I love your ring and your nails! Congrats OP!

Yes, it's hard to judge from a picture because it obviously depends how long your fingers are as to how thin and bony they look at any given ring size!

It’s also quite possible to have tiny boned fingers that aren’t thin, and thin fingers with bigger bones. Ring size is dependent on the size of your finger bones and joints. Dd has fingers that are very similar but thinner than mine as she is very thin and I am too podgy, but she can’t get my wedding ring on as her joint there is fractionally larger than mine.

I did wonder about buying a ring sizer off Amazon but wasn’t sure how accurate they are! Also I guess if that suggests the same size as what they measured in the shop it doesn’t really help, the problem must be the actual ring not the size if that makes sense?

I’ve not read the full thread so it might have been suggested already - buy an Amazon ring sizer, measure and then send that part to them with the ring (either cut the band off or mark it in some way).

I'd take it to a local jewellers and ask if they would check the size of the ring and measure your finger too and then get in touch with the jeweller you bought it from to agree a solution. There's a possibility that they've sent you the wrong size of ring - mistakes do happen. My engagement ring fit me when we bought it, but the size that was stated in the paperwork that came along with it was wrong. I didn't realise until I ordered a wedding ring in the size I thought my engagement ring was but it was far too big!

It doesn’t look too small, yes you need to use some force to wiggle over the boney knuckle but after the joint the soft tissue squishes and that’s where the ring will sit. Can you get it fully on off with the help of lotion?

Not a good idea, if it's a very tight fit, as it would be if it were forced over the knuckle, then you will have problems if your fingers expand for whatever reason. When we flew to NZ, so in the air for almost 24 hours, my ring finger was bleeding because my wedding ring had become so tight on the flight, I had to have it cut off the day after we landed.

@aardvarkappeal - I meant to say in my PP that it’s a stunning ring. One of the loveliest I’ve seen, and looks beautiful (almost) on you. Congratulations!

excelledyourself · 22/02/2026 20:37

Congratulations, OP. Noting your username, did you get your ring from Aardvark Jewellery? They really have the most beautiful rings.

aardvarkappeal · 22/02/2026 20:40

Thank you for all the kind comments, I really do love it! Definitely can’t get it much further down and even if I could I hate when rings looks like have been squeezed on as I worry what would happen if they needed to be removed in an emergency (also makes your fingers look fat no matter how slim they are..)

Ahh yes I wondered if anyone would recognise the name Smile I actually started a thread on here a while ago asking for recommendations of jewellers and someone recommended them, they have been fabulous up to now so hoping this gets sorted smoothly.

I had my rings from the JQ some years ago now but received the same advice even though my wedding ring was clearly a size too small!
I think partly it’s because so many people never take them off so once it’s on, it’s on, kind of thing but I absolutely hate the feeling of anything being stuck (makes me genuinely panicky) so I have to be able to get them off. Explain how you would like it to fit and they should honour it, even if the ‘norm’ is tighter

Arcticbattle32 · 22/02/2026 21:10

Hard to say. People’s fingers are all sorts of shapes. My issue is that my knuckles are mostly all wider than the rest of my actual fingers….so for me the only relevant measurement is - can I get it over my knuckle - and back off again. You have comparatively dainty joints… If the ring is bigger, will it fall off do you think? I do see what you mean though, maybe it could do with being a bit looser.

SirChenjins · 22/02/2026 21:15

I've no idea and hope you can get it resized - it's a beautiful ring, congratulations!

Now onto more important matters - your nails are gorgeous! What did you get done to them? They're exactly what I want exactly for my son's wedding but have absolutely no idea what to ask for 😊

I think it is called a Milky French or old money French. It’s BIAB base (although same could be done in normal gel) and then the tip is a milky white mixed up with a bit of normal white added to make it stand out slightly more. I never liked the starkness of a French tip but my nail tech suggested this once and I love it.

They did! They used a ring sizer then which is why I’m not sure buying one will help as it should just confirm I am size M like in the shop?

A jeweller can check whether the ring measures as an M too.

Zivvy · 22/02/2026 18:55

I don't want to be insensitive OP, but I don't think you are a size M. I am a size M, and my fingers are quite slim and bony. I will add a photo.
I think they've made a simple mistake with the size they've measured you.

I'm an M too and have very dumpy fat fingers compared to OP, so not sure you can base it off appearances.

I think local jewellers or ring sizer is your best bet.
