Smart casual workwear - mainly shoes

I have a work conference to go to and need two outfits, both business smart casual, one evening ish one day.

I wfh and live in comfy clothes/trainers. I’ve also lost a lot of weight and don’t have many clothes that fit. I have some pre Covid smart work dresses but all feel a bit dated and try hard. At some point over the last 5 years I have lost the inclination/ ability to wear heels.

I’ve got some loose fitting blouses, decent bags and some newish black skinny jeans. I was thinking about a pleated maxi skirt or is that very old fashioned now? I’ve got a casual burgundy blazer which I’ve worn over black stuff to smarten it up. I want to wear my everyday jewellery not anything costume/statement. I’ve got suitable bags.

I’ve realised my main problem is shoes so I need to reserve the majority of my budget for that. I live in trainers but my current ones aren’t new enough to be smart enough. I have some pointed toed navy knee high boots from years ago but I don’t think they are me anymore. I bought some patent loafers from H&M a few years ago but I don’t really like them, or loafers/shoes generally. I do like ballet flats but do hate having to wear silly little invisible sock things that always slip off or poke out.

Would I look ridiculous if I bought some converse? I’m kind of on the fence about wearing trainers anyway. What else could I look at if I’m not sure about loafers?

I’m 40s, size 12/14, about 5ft 4.

Budget probably up to about £180 to cover bits to make 2 outfits along with what I already have. Thank you in advance.

I saw a nice long pleated skirt in All Saints yesterday. I’m not much help on shoes, I mostly wear trainers with trousers, I do have a pair of loafers I like which are super comfortable and otherwise boots.

I think an addition of loafers to your working wardrobe would be a good idea. There are so many variations, colours that you should be able to find something that works.
