How do I get my skin to stay still?

I need some advice please. When I’m putting on face powder, foundation, concealer, eye shadow etc, my skin is of a certain age (50’s) and it moves around as I’m trying to apply the cosmetics. I know it’s probably due to loss of elasticity, more wrinkles etc but what can I do or use to ensure I’m not chasing my skin around my face!?!? I can’t think of another way to describe it. 😂

A light touch. Patting, not dragging.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 21/02/2026 20:22

I do try but the skin just doesn’t seem to have the right surface to apply any make up to.

Lighter weight products then?

TroubledBloodyMary · 22/02/2026 06:47

Sorry to be a bore but have you thought about whether you honestly need concealer + foundation + powder + eyeshadow to look your best? You could almost certainly find lighter weight products that do a better job.

I agree - switch to lighter products that can just be dabbed on.
i’m 53 and use a skin tint mixed with a glow lotion - no concealer or powder.
Cream blush and cream bronzer - I just use cream bronzer in the crease of my eye so no eyeshadow.
Mascara and lip gloss and done.
It’s a lot quicker and I look so much more fresh that when I was using foundation, concealer, powder the full works.

You need to change the products you are using

shuffleofftobuffalo · 22/02/2026 09:07

Yep definitely need to change your products, and possibly your brushes too. Lighter products, cream blush, use less dense brushes and a light touch. If your skin isn’t “receiving” the products well look at your skincare and a hydrating primer.

When you say lighter products, do you mean creams rather than powders?

The trick that actually works for this is applying your skincare and letting it fully absorb and settle for at least ten minutes before touching any makeup, and then using a silicone based primer specifically designed for mature skin since it fills in the texture and creates a slightly grippy surface that gives your foundation and powder something to hold onto rather than sliding around on top of your moisturizer.

That’s really helpful, thank you so much. I’m going out to buy some new products!

Brilliant advice - I use this: https://www.boots.com/sheglam-pore-no-more-primer-30g-10370648

I'm 47 and it honestly makes my skin so soft and like a canvas. I don't use powder anymore as I think it sets in crevices. I just use this and then let it dry and pop some foundation over the top blended with a bit of suncream. It's not full coverage but it is dewy and gives me an even tone, which is all I need.

That's my skin sorted, but I also need to revamp my eye situation, so have got some Trinny London Eye 2 Eye shadows - just waiting to try them out once my stupid sinus situation is sorted - hate touching my eyelids and my browbone at the moment as too painful!: https://trinnylondon.com/uk/products/eye-contact

Thank you for the links, I will certainly have a look. I’ve used powder as part of my (very basic) make up routine for more than 40 years 😳 so it will feel strange trying without it. But I’m definitely going to give it a go. Sorry you’re not feeling well, sinus pain is awful. Hope you start to feel better very soon. 💐

Thanks lovely - waiting for a CT scan currently which I already know will uncover goop in my head!
