Shoes that work with orthotics

Recently diagnosed with hallux rigidus (stiff big toe joint) and now have orthotics. I can't wear trainers to work everyday - I'm really struggling to find brands with shoes that have removable insoles which I can wear with orthotics.

Does anyone have an brands they could recommend - or, even better, specific models of shoe they could suggest - which have some smarter (and preferably don't look too much like orthopaedic footwear!) vaguely stylish shoes?

Hotter aren’t THAT bad, there are some Mary Jane styles that may be acceptable.

Legaro do nice trainers.

I currently have some nice Camper ballet flats with elastic over the top that may fit orthoses (though the heel counter might be too shallow).

Birkenstock do shoes with removable insoles.

It’s tough!

I just embraced trainers and chunky biker boots. I’ve encouraged mum to do the same but she likes a pump - it’s not ideal.

In time it might be more of a case of looking for a style of shoe to accommodate the orthotic. You will get used to the style and shape that works.

So in my kids case I look for extra wide and make sure it’s not too shallow. A high top is better than a regular trainer but it depends on the make. We also need a rigid heel and adjustable on width with laces or Velcro. It’s not easy but for them I find for example puma/addidas/kickers/DM/timberland will often be the go to brands for the kids. Nike often have removable internal sole.

If you want a more classic dress shoe that’s difficult. Maybe look at shoe-boot styles then later sandals made with orthotics in mind. Podiatrist might be able to suggest some ideas there

Pavers?

vionics are often mentioned, I haven’t got any myself

Some clarke's styles have rwmovable insoles; some Gabor do, Hotter do. With a loafer or lace-up you can go half a size bigger and they still stay on, same for Mary Janes.

I woukd like not to know this.

I have this and only wear Hokas. I’m thinking of trying Birkenstocks in the summer (with the back strap). You can wear trainers to work they have to make adjustments for a disability. I’m going to a posh restaurant next week where trainers are not permitted but they’ve agreed I can wear my clumpy Hokas! I don’t have orthotics yet though.

Ecco are good for orthotics, but they can be pricey. Brogues are useful. Other than that I tend to wear ankle boots, size up if you can as it makes it easier to get the depth you need
