Products for taming very curly hair?

DS1 (nearly 6) has gorgeous curly hair which falls into ringlets when it's wet but as soon as it's dry it turns into a frizzy mess. What can I put on it to keep the defined curls?
I've tried olive oil, (special children's) mousse, detangler sprays but nothing really works.

If you don't mind splashing out (bit pricey for children's hair imo but I don't know how badly you want this!):

Aveda Be Curly range

It's amazing.

A friend of mine has a ringlet haired dd and she puts a bit of conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle and uses that?

claireybee · 16/06/2008 12:56

DD has mixed afro hair and I use this on her hair.

I also wash it using the babassu shampoo bar and that has made a huge difference too.

This stuff is also good and smells lovely.

Thanks, I'll give those a try.
How much is the Aveda Janehh?

That whipped butter sounds lovely claireybee.
I'll probably try the conditioner mixed with water first.

I have just bought Frizz ease shampoo and condtioner.
Its a particular one for curls and it is fantastic.

I normally have to put serum on my hair after I wash it but with this I didnt have to.

Would really recommend it.

Flamesparrow · 16/06/2008 13:32

I wet down DS's hair and then brush over it with bilberry detangler from bodyshop (I spray the brush, not his head - it is too concentrated like that). I then scrunch it and he gets gorgeous set curls.

Today it is untouched and he looks like Gene Wilder

So many to try!
I'll try the watered down conditioner first then work my way through all these suggestions and see what works.
Thanks

I agree with Aveda Be Curly. Though it does cost £15 a tube it is the best curly hair stuff I've ever found ( and I've tried a lot). It doesn't leave the hair at all greasy which can ahppen with serums.
But another alternative: a tiny dab of conditioner mixed with frizz-ease is second best and far far cheaper!
Agree with the advice about never brushing hair to keep the ringlets ( except when wet).

Someone recommended Boots serum on my budget brand thread and it's 1.99 I think?

peacelily · 16/06/2008 20:51

Frissease curl spray activator (or something like that) works ok on my v curly hair.

i've tried everything believe and the best ones are bumble and bumble curly range and frederic fekkai curly range. Both v expensive from SpaceNK so I rarely get them.

they work miracles though if you can afford to splash out.

Find frissease serum is often a little heavy.

I use either Boots essentials curl creme (about £2 a pot) or L'Oreal Curl Power curl controlling creme (£5 a bottle). I find both are very good at taming my very curly hair!

LyraSilvertongue · 16/06/2008 23:10

Oooh, more!
Thanks again. I'll try them all till i get one that works.

A while back site was recommended. My 3 year dd has very curly hair, she won't let me brush it and it goes into dreadlocks in no time at all. I bought the hydrating conditioner and use a tiny bit and the daily leave-in conditioner. Both are fantastic can't recommend them high;y enough.

hoxtonchick · 17/06/2008 10:15

another curly hair products thread, these always cost me a fortune . i stick gel on my hair, then some leave in conditioner & then some wax. that might all be too high maintenance for a 6 year old though.....
