Hi all you lovely lot.
I've got a job interview coming up after being out of the workforce for various reasons for the last 7/8 years. This will be my very 1st face to face interview and I want to make sure I look as professional and presentable as possible.
I'm looking for a at least knee length smart skirt, a nice neat white blouse or shirt or maybe even off white like a beige or cream colour if the top is smart enough and a black blazer.
I've recently lost a lot of weight and gone from a dress size 18/20 to a size 8. Also I am only 5ft 2in my budget for the 3 items altogether is probably about £50 do you think this is doable or do I need to stretch my budget to about £60/£70? Can any of you lovely lot find something for me as I really want to get this right and I am so nervous. Thanks so much for any helpful advice and suggestions.

I second everyone saying charity shops
Have to dress smart for my jobs and picked up a fab Hobbs sweater dress for a fiver yesterday which I will pair with a navy blazer
Sainsburys also a good option for cheap workwear

MsOtisReflects · 10/03/2026 13:10

Best of luck, @Anon543210!

Good luck OP! Looks great

Anon543210 · 10/03/2026 13:50

Thank you posters I'm going to tuck the top into the pants and pull it over the top a bit. When I tried it on in matalan I felt really smart and sophisticated absolutely over the moon with the price aswell.

Not sure a vest is super smart - everything looks a bit boring to
me. Good luck though.

I really like the jacket!

Its actually looked really smart all on and put together i tucked the top in and folded it a bit over the trousers and with the jacket on it did look nice.

Super helpful once bought and on interview date, thankfully you sent this after the interview so wouldn't have given the OP a good kick in the teeth just pre-interview.

It’s an interview. Boring is fine. This isn’t the time to shout from the rooftops - “look at my clothes”.

The top looks, smart and professional and goes well with the outfit so it will all look well put together. Well done, op on getting it all at that price.

Please let us know how the interview went.

OhDear111 · 11/03/2026 10:24

@Kepler22B I do think an interview is a chance to show some personality, Grey and boring - ok if that’s what you are. Personally I like to see a bit more of the persons character. Obviously not way out but how you dress and present yourself gives an impression and should be reflecting you. Looking boring is maybe not the best look.

I think that @Anon543210 's outfit choice is perfect. In any case, I'm sure her character and experience will shine through. You may need a colourful dress to make up for a lack of personality but some of us are capable of making a good impression with conversation.

Hi posters so bit of an update I got the job. I start on 11th May I think thats so they've got time to contact references and everything but yeah I'm so happy. And for the pp who said it was a boring outfit i don't need an out there outfit as I have an outgoing personality and I will speak to anyone and the way I interview and answer questions and speak to the interviewers I'm always confident and outgoing. But thank you for your opinion anyway I like to listen to all points of view and to all the other pp's that were helpful and wished me luck thank you so much x
