Wool jumpers

I’ve realised I’ve got hundreds of pounds worth of wool and cashmere jumpers and I’m probably not storing them very well.

When you’re wearing them regularly in winter, how do you store them? Just folded in drawers? Cedar blocks? Boxes? Anything that’s actually worked for you with moths etc?

Just curious what other people do that works.

I have my expensive one folded across the front (shoulder to shoulder) then rolled like a towel & keep them in 2 drawers. They’re not as creased as folding & easier to find the one I want (the drawers are shallow so I can’t stack them once rolled) I thought this would take up more space but surprisingly I was able to fit more in like this

Clean, rolled, in wood drawers with moth sachets.

I store all mine in sealed plastic storage bags with only two jumpers per bag now after I had a moth issue. The cedar things don't work. I also freeze them all once a year for 2 weeks to get rid of any eggs.

I hand wash in cold water then fold flat in drawers. I’m a convert to using olive Savon de Marseille to keep moths and bugs off, I don’t know how it works but I haven’t had an issue for several years now since being introduced to it.

I'm interested in how you wash them. I'm terrified of shrinking mine.

ElizabethVonArnim · 19/02/2026 09:35

I’ve nailed the shrinking problem after years of issues with this - v simple solution. Wash on a wool cycle, but turn the temp down to 20° (UV our washing machine goes straight to cold once you reduce from 30°, so I use cold) and have a medium quick spin cycle on 1200. Wash inside out and don’t use fabric conditioner, or very little just for the scent. It is honestly better than hand washing (I’ve found) as gets more water out and they reshape better and dry faster. It does give a slightly fluffy texture, so I iron mine to get the flat sheen back.

Thanks everyone.

I wash my knitwear exactly like @ElizabethVonArnim and I have never had any issues.

Thanks for that tip @Tortephant. I love Traditional Savon de Marseille but I had no idea it's a natural moth repellent!

Following a suggestion from here, I ‘bake’ my jumpers on a low heat (70 to 80 Celsius) for half an hour to kill moths/ eggs/ larvae and then store in plastic boxes with moth prevention strips.
