After losing weight, did you get rid of all your too-big clothes or wimp out and keep them?

I'm thinking the brave thing to do would be to give them all to charity, but can't help thinking, what if I put the weight back on?!! Expensive, this weight loss business!

i got rid of them over time starting off with the hugest

brimfull · 16/06/2008 08:33

well I lost loads and threw most out,I now regret throwing out some long linen skirts as they were so handy and I've put a bit back on.

The right thing to do is chuck everything because you will always be as thin as you are now but in reality I think you should keep a few bits and pieces.

My fat clothes were very useful in pregnancy - you know the transitional bit where you're not quite big enough for maternity yet. And useful after I had the baby.

Jacksmybaby · 16/06/2008 08:40

Broc, agree that was my other thought, for when/if we decide to take the plunge again. Maybe will put a batch in a bag in the attic, for such an occasion.
The annoying thing is, haven't really lost very much weight, about one/two dress sizes, but just enough to make all the old clothes hang off me and look really unflattering!

I've gone from a size 16 to a 14 (and am hoping to get to a 12) in the last few months and have instantly banished anything that is too big.

mellyonion · 16/06/2008 09:00

i went from a 16/18 to a 10.

i sold my cool stuff on ebay (fat face, surfy type wear, anything "good") and made nearly £300 on about 15 items! i was well chuffed......

it was quite theraputic to see them gone, but felt a bit scared in case i put on again. i have maintained my weight for a year now, give or take a few lbs up and down, but am not allowing it to creep back on without noticing.

get rid of them.....go on!!

SheherazadetheGoat · 16/06/2008 09:01

agree ebay any nice stuff.

wasabipeanut · 16/06/2008 09:05

Get rid - just do it! Having loads of space in your wardrobe and drawers is a very liberating feeling.

After dropping from 18 to a 14 chucking out all my baggy old rubbishy t shirts felt great. I packed proper maternity clothes away nicely in those vacumn bags and put them in the loft.

Jewelsandgems · 16/06/2008 12:16

I think get rid of them all!

If your new smaller size clothes start getting a bit tight you will HAVE to loose the weight again (instead of just doing the easy thing and getting out your old big clothes)

But, agree that ebay is a good idea.

New you! New clothes! Don't go back!

greenday · 16/06/2008 12:20

I get them altered and sewn in. So then, I have 'more' clothes !

threestars · 16/06/2008 17:10

I threw LOADS out last year (had to make space as was renting out house). Whaddaya know? I then got pregnant and now, since having DD 2 months ago, I'm relying on long t-shirts and dresses. Ah well, salads here I come.

HaventSleptForAYear · 17/06/2008 14:54

I agree with broccolispears - I was much better equipped for early pregnancy DS2 and post-birth DS2 because I had bought/kept some clothes in a size up.

But now I should probably GET RID.

What about clothes which are too SMALL for you - I nearly got rid of all of mine after DS1 but now can wear a lot again.

How long do you keep out-grown clothes for in general?

belcantavinissima · 17/06/2008 15:44

i have gone from a 16/18 to a 12 and have absolutely got rid of all my fat clothes.its been the best excuse ever to get new clothes and i am not going to be that big ever ever again. for the first time in years i feel fabulous! and most of my fat clothes were things i bought because i fitted into them not cos i loved them. oh, apart form a ghost dress which i need to see if i can get taken in as i have only worn it twice last summer and want to wear it to my friends wedding in sept

Jacksmybaby · 18/06/2008 13:06

Somehow the choice would seem easier if like some of you I had lost several dress sizes (and well done all of you who have) but because I've only gone down one/in some cases two (depending on the make!), sizes, it just seems less clear cut as I could very easily go up one size again, iyswim. But they are so unflattering now, they actually make me look worse than when I was bigger and fitted them!
Haventslept, i know what u mean, I got rid of a load of stuff including my Hobbs work suits about 3 years ago when they were too small, which I'm now really regretting as I'm back to that size again, and now of course can't afford Hobbs suits on part time salary with childcare costs etc!

Troutpout · 18/06/2008 13:13

Threw them all out

wish i hadn't

HaventSleptForAYear · 18/06/2008 19:58

Aha - I see there are still some who would keep - I think I need to seriously sort the storage out though!

lovecat · 18/06/2008 22:22

I gave away/ebayed about 95% of mine - only kept a few pieces that I'd really liked wearing when I was a 14 (I went from an 18/20 to a 10/12) and put them up in the loft.

Like Jewelsandgems said, I feel that if I only have my smaller clothes then it's more of an incentive to stay this size!
