Coat, shoes and jeans combo for Paris city break please (comfy but stylish)

Going on a short break to Paris with primary aged DC. Not going out in the evenings, just doing museums etc. weather forecast looks hard to pinpoint, similar to how it has been where I am in London, so cloud, drizzle at times, possible showers, possible dry spells, temperatures around 8.

I don’t have much packing space and am trying to work out what shoes and coat to bring. My outfits will be a variation of jumper / sweater and jeans! But the style of jeans will be drawn from the footwear.

i will pack a waterproof kagool type thing for if it really is torrential, and will obviously have umbrella.

What one jacket / coat and pair of shoes combination should I bring?

I have available:
an olive Barbour wax jacket (oversized slightly contemporary design
a charcoal grey funnel neck barrel shaped wool coat (hip-length)
a trench coat (calf length)
Long puffer coat (not keen as might be too bulky)

blue onitsuka tigers (v comfy)
blue adidas (not as comfy)
veja Venturi charcoal / grey (chunky hiking type trainers)
black Chelsea boots

various jeans (wide leg, straight leg, barrel, slim, long / cropped)

what combo of coat, shoes and jeans would you choose?

Forgot to add, I am going past Uniqlo later so could purchase a more stylish waterproof coat/jacket so that I wear that instead and not need to pack a kagool. Then I would need to think about colour.

When I do city breaks I wear nice trainers, one nice coat with a hood and leave it at that. Don’t pack extra shoes unless it’s summer I might squeeze in a pair of sandals

The Barbour jacket and the most comfortable shoes. Can't help with jeans. I wouldn't take the cagoule. I would take more than one pair of shoes as if you're doing a lot of city walking a change might be wise.

Someone will be along shortly to tell you all Parisiennes are soo chic (they aren't) and what to wear to blend in so you don't look like a tourist (never sure why that's so important)

If the Chelsea boots are comfortable I’d wear them, I’d also opt for a trench coat then layer as you’ll be in and out of buildings, overheating is an issue.

I wouldnt buy another coat, you already have four!
id wear either the barbour jacket or the wool coat then either chelsea boots (best in case of rain) or Veja trainers (just because i dont think onitsuka are suitable for a lot of walking, the sole is pretty thin). Then straight or slim jeans.
i’d also pack a couple of jumpers and some comfy cotton tshirts. An umbrella or a hat for the rain. Not a cagoule!!!

Ok thanks. I think Barbour is most sensible as it’s drizzle proof vs wool coat

I'd take the straight leg jeans as that's my favourite style at the moment and also practical in the rain.

I don't like trainers but I assume you do so whichever are the most comfortable.

Sensible me would pack the barbour but there's a high chance I'd swap it at the last minute for the trench, as I adore swanning around in a long coat.

PhaedraWas · 15/02/2026 11:23

Sensible me now on this type of trip always goes for the 2 most comfortable shoes for lots of walking regardless of what they look like and whichever showerproof coat can best stand being crammed into overhead compartments on train or plane or stuffed into a bag when not needed.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/02/2026 11:30

I wouldn’t take the cagoule. I’d either wear the trench and take a hat and a brolly, or buy a better raincoat.

Anndalouzier · 15/02/2026 11:55

I would wait and see what the weather forecast is

CambridgeCats · 15/02/2026 11:59

Forecast is as above - chance of rain

Oh sorry. I just wear a normal coat and take a small umbrella and if it really pulls it down, you can go into a café restaurant or museum
