Critique my wedding make up for my 55-year old face

Please. All advice is that I should be using cream products for my age and I want to look the best version of myself - ha-ha. I am getting married in March and would love any tips, esp. regarding lipstick-do I need lip liner for my thin lips?) and blusher. Most bridal make up videos I have seen ( a lot) are a bit hideous to be honest - heavy bronzer/ contour ( face looks muddy) heavy eye shadow/ fake eyelashes and too much highlighter I am having a hydrating facial a few days before. So, products-

  1. Charlotte Tilbury blurring primer including using on eyelids
  2. Foundation? My skin is not bad so could I skip it, but I am not 21 or even 31! I got a sample of Victoria Beckham foundation drops which are lovely but not in shock in my shade.
  3. Victoria Beckham corrective pen - I splashed out and seems a good match/ coverage.
  4. Blush – ?? I struggle with this and have good cheekbones but end up looking like Aunt Sally. Liked the idea of a cheek & lip stain and purchased the benefit benetint, but it looked patchy on my tired old cheeks and lip coverage was not defined enough
  5. Highlighter ?? Have a mini westman atelier highlighter in nectar- have the CT skin sheer glow stick to ramp it up
  6. Natasha Denona’s dream eye shadow palette for my piggy eyes- don’t wear eyeliner.
  7. Curl eye lashes and then tube mascara as I will cry
  8. Lipstick – it does not last on me, so cream/satin texture as opposed to mat. Could a lip primer help? Looking at the MAC lip primer
10. Charlotte Tilbury airbrush setting power on nose/chin and forehead but leave the glow on cheekbones then CT setting spray.

Do I need bronzer? I don’t wear it usually. Any pointers / recommendations welcome.

Hi that sounds a lot of stuff, i follow Kate Hughes on facebook and instagram she is great for tips for maturer skin i have shifted to some cream products on her recomendation anyway look her up and if you comment on her videos she replies.

I agree about Kate Hughes, then take your time and practice, practice, practice. You need really good light, preferably daylight.

I got married last year and booked a make over at the John Lewis beauty counter a couple of months before. They're not tied to particular products which I liked and they gave me pointers on how to apply my blush and bronzer which I appreciated. My make up was similar to yours, the only extra was an eyebrow pencil from benefit.

I got married last year (57) and chose a makeup artist that was a similar age to me. So got I just wanted to look a slightly polished version of me.

Did a trial in advance. Toned it down a bit and I felt a million dollars on the day. All day.

I think the idea to get someone to do your makeup professionally and buy the products/follow their tips is next best thing.

Go to Bobbi Brown or Trinny London and have a lesson. But also you don’t need “bridal” makeup - you need whatever you think makes you look lovely - and that could be full slap or just a bit of mascara and a lipgloss!

Have you bought all of these already?

If you want a blusher, Nars liquid blusher is lovely.

I would suggest working on your skin leading up to the wedding - if you have time.

pepperminticecream · 11/02/2026 15:24

Lisa Eldridge has the most amazing wedding makeup video tutorial on her YouTube that I highly recommend watching.

Agree it's worth getting a professional to do a makeover, and copy what they do. You want to look like YOU, no need to have makeup trowelled on....and it needs to last for a full day too. Failing that, do a few trial runs.

From your description, I would add an eyebrow product (Benefit are good).

Re: blusher, if you look like Aunt Sally you are applying it too low/centrally - on faces of a certain age, move it higher onto the cheekbones for a lifting effect. I actually find Benetint really difficult to blend, so maybe try a good cream blusher. I rate Merit, but Elf have some nice ones. Boots No7 Pro Artist do really lovely two-ended blush/highlighter sticks, really blendable and not too loud.

Lipstick - there are lots of long-lasting ones out there - I just discovered Nyx Lip Lingerie which is still there at bedtime. Or Maybelline Superstay comes in both matte and gloss finishes.

Agree with this. But don't mention it's for your wedding. They will probably charge more. I got Bobbi Brown to do my makeup the morning of my wedding 😬
