Hair despair

Is there anything, ANYTHING, which will tackle frizz once it’s set in? I can blow dry my hair smooth, but the second it’s exposed to damp (hello winter), it springs into a frizzy mess. I use olaplex products to try to boost the moisture levels and always use a heat protector, but nothing seems to have a lasting effect. Obviously I could slather on the oils and serums, but it would take a bucket full, and anyway it just leaves my hair lank and sticky. I hate it so much!

I like the Colour Wow dream coat, it keeps my hair frizz free for around 3 washes.

I've had to manage frizz since peri, I'm now a good way into menopause. I've tried loads. I just decided to throw money at it until I found what works best. What works for one might not work for another. I've ended up with aveda botanical shampoo and the mask, which I use as conditioner each time. I do this late afternoon /early evening, air dry, applying argon oil when nearly dry. The day of washing is still quite fluffy, but it's usually tamed by the next morning. I only ever brush/comb in the shower, on all other days I just use my fingers to "comb" it.

Thanks for responses so far. Just to clarify, I’m hoping for ideas on what to use on hair between washes. I can get it smooth post-wash, but it doesn’t last!

Could be build up from using wrong the shampoo for your hair type. Maybe you just need a light weight shampoo (the simple brand) and a very small amount conditioner or no conditioner. Let your hair air dry. When nearly dry apply a small amount of argon oil hair serum and just leave it alone. Brush hair before bed, mist hair with water, apply some lightweight hair serum, sleep with your hair in a braid. You just need to undo the braid in the morning maybe apply some lightweight hair serum and that should keep your frizz away. Do not brush your hair in the morning, only in the evening before water mist, serum and braid. I find often the problem with frizz is wrong shampoo and not embracing your hairs natural wave pattern

Do you use heat tools after blow drying? I find going over it with straighteners is essential. If I put curls in with tongs or straighteners rather than keeping it straight, that also keeps the frizz minimal.

products I like for frizz - Paul Mitchell - gloss drops, O&M frizzy logic serum, Davines Oi milk - I use it on my dry hair even though it says for damp hair.
Sam McKnight Modern hair spray to spray down frizz and Larry King social life for your hair for baby hair frizz.
You could look at the DryBar products, they are based around maintaining your blow dry.

In desperation I splashed out on Fabriq, which is a Keratin treatment. Keratin treatments are highly recommended on the regular MN frizzy hair threads. It was my last hope, and I was very sceptical. Just looked back and I had it done 5 months ago, it’s still working fine. A game changer.

Meadowflower2023 · 10/02/2026 22:16

@pariswindowcan you provide more details on the Fabriq please? Very interested in this method but just had a quick google and no idea which products to get?

pariswindow · 11/02/2026 07:10

@Meadowflower2023 Fabriq is a brand of Keratin treatment. AFAIK you can only get it in a salon and expect to pay £180+.

During treatment there’s a bit of a whiff of glue and candle wax, You have to use sulphate free shampoo & conditioner afterwards to avoid dissolving the bonds which are on each individual strand of hair. Pureology Hydrate Sheer shampoo & conditioner was recommended, it’s cheaper to buy online than at the salon.

There were two types of treatment offered: an “up to 60 days” and the more expensive “up to 6 months”. I tried the 60 days first, that was a waste of money on my hair and soon wore off, but gave me an idea of what it would look like, and the confidence to go for the big guns treatment.

I have regular all over highlights which haven’t affected the texture of my new hair.

Try sleeping in a silk or satin bonnet. This was a game changer for my very frizzy hair.

Meadowflower2023 · 11/02/2026 21:05

@pariswindowbrilliant, thank you. Off to Google salons near me that will offer this.

Let us know how you get on!

Make sure you follow the instructions for the Colour Wow, I didn’t realise you had to apply tension to the hair when blow drying after applying 🙈. Worked much better after I figured that out!

Try the Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier hairspray, it really works on my hair.
Have a look on Boots at the reviews, you can always start with a little can of it for about £2

Olaplex makes my hair even more frizzy so I stopped using it. I use a mixture of things. Kerastase discipline blow dry cream, or Sebastian frizz cream or sometimes Color Wow dreamcoat but the normal one isn’t too effective for me I need to order the extreme and try that.
